There will be a cost of $60 per student which includes 4 x 1 hour sessions and bus transport. This excursion forms part of the user-pays basis of the Parent Payment Arrangement Policy. Grade 5/6 Biocats

The Geelong Cats employ a team of scientists and mathematicians to help ensure that their athletes are able to analyse and refine their performance and technique to gain the winning edge.

BioCATS is run from the Deakin Cats Community Centre at GMHBA Stadium as a full day program. Students and teachers participate in dynamic scientific experiments, using problem solving, statistical analysis and observation skills to learn about the science and mathematics of football and career pathways in sport.

The program also reinforces the concepts of health and wellness and the benefits that come from sports participation.

Engaging year 5 and 6 students in the science, maths, technology and health of Australian Rules football, the BioCATS program has been delivered to more than 14,000 students since inception in 2012.

The free full-day program delivered from the Deakin Cats Community Centre provides students and teachers with an opportunity to experience a day in the life of an elite athlete through GPS data tracking and analysis, the skill of handballing and the importance of nutrition and hydration and the benefits that come from sports participation.

On Monday 27th May, we plan to take advantage of this amazing opportunity and take the Grade 5/6s to Geelong to participate in this program. The day will involve:

  • Skills analysis.
  • Data collection.
  • Athlete testing.
  • Data analysis, graphing and problem solving.

There will be no cost for the day. Biocats run the program free of charge as well as subsidise the bus. We will depart Toolamba at 7:00am and return approximately 5:30 – 6:00pm. There will be a permission form to complete on XUNO and an information sheet sent home prior to the day.

We will follow up later in the term – Friday 21st June, with another day in Geelong at Biolab

This program uses STEM investigations to explore the different methods athletes have used to get the advantage in sport.Students are challenged to use mathematical reasoning; scientific testing; and scientific literacy skills to explore shoe technology; sports doping; mechanical advantage and discover many weird and wonderful stories of successful and foiled cheating attempts in between!

There will be no cost for this day either. Biolab run the program free of charge as well as subsidise the bus. There will be more information to follow regarding this day.
