Sport News

Mr Derek Lennon, Head of Sport

Last weekend was the midpoint of the winter season as we competed against St Peters Lutheran College. On a wonderful day for sport Marist enjoyed the bulk of the results across both football codes.

The weekend started on Friday night when our 1st IV chess team hosted St Peters. Unfortunately, we went down 11-5. The Senior A team kept their undefeated season alive but St Peters dominated the results overall.

On Saturday the rugby program was split across Brisbane with St Peters only having a few rugby teams. We ended up playing against every other AIC school (except St Edmunds) and also Terrace, Nudgee and Canterbury College. It was a really good day across the program as everyone got a competitive game of rugby. Thank you to Mr Richard Graham and Mr Matt Millward for the work they put in last week ensuring we had games for all teams. The 1st XV were dominant from the outset racking up an 85-0 victory.

In football St Peters have more teams but we still had a number of supplementary matches. Marist dominated the day, enjoying the bulk of the wins. The 1st XI maintained their undefeated start to the season, sitting in top position in the AIC with four wins. The toughest matches are still to come but the boys are well placed for a strong finish.

In a busy week in sport, our cross country boys are approaching the business end of their season. This week we have had the Met North trials, the final AIC lead up meet at Runcorn and our opens team are being presented with their singlets at the College assembly. We wish all our runners the very best as they prepare for this iconic championship event next Wednesday 27th at Shorncliffe.

Congratulations to our open Water Polo team who took out the Brisbane Invitational, keeping the title they won last year. Well done boys and thanks to Mr Ryan Apps for your leadership of water polo and passion for the team and the sport.

This weekend we will be facing St Patricks College, Shorncliffe. The AIC are recognising reconciliation this weekend and our 1st teams will be representing the College in our new Indigenous jerseys, proudly designed by, and representative of, all the nations and regions our Marist Indigenous boys come from.

First XV v St Patricks College

Mid-week rugby is on again this week with the 1st XV match against St Pats being played this Wednesday afternoon at 3:15pm at Curlew Park, Shorncliffe due to the QSSS state titles this weekend.

Positive Supporting

School sport provides us with a wonderful opportunity for boys to play sports, try new activities, represent the college and play with their mates. It is a safe, inclusive environment for all and a positive experience for players, coaches and staff and spectators. I take this opportunity to remind our whole college community that we have an obligation to play our part in this when we are on school grounds spectating.

When we are watching our boys sport, as coaches and supporters, we must be setting the best example possible for the boys. That includes accepting any umpire decision, regardless of whether we felt it was correct or not, respecting and encouraging all players on the field, and being always gracious in victory or defeat. It is up to all of to make sure school sport remains the safe and inclusive experience it has traditionally been.

No Dogs on Site

The AIC has a policy of no dogs on site at any of the venues. Please support this and leave your pets at home. There are a lot of people and lots of noise, motion and excitement to stir up even the most placid of dogs from time to time.

Commitment

We have reached that point in the term when assignments kick in, exams are on the horizon and next term’s sports are starting to send out information about trials and opportunities next term. There is a lot to distract us from the commitment we have in front of, the sport we are currently playing. Please make sure current sports, football, rugby cross country and chess remain our priority right through to the end of the season.

My experience in boys education tells me that boys do better when maintaining a regular routine, this includes in exam times. Boys thrive on familiarity and consistency with their schedules and so training for teams will continue through to the end of the season for all teams. Where any individual feels they would benefit from missing training in the morning because they have an exam first up, we support this but please make sure you communicate with your coach and year co-ordinator in advance.

Football

Mr Derek Lennon (Football Coordinator)

There is a real momentum in our football program at the moment. Over the four rounds of competition we have comprehensively outplayed our opposition, with number listed above from this weekend being similar from the Villanova and Iona rounds, and honours a bit more even from the Padua round. The next three rounds are going to be vital in getting points for the aggregate shield, and St Laurence's will be the biggest challenge. Looking at the results from that trial, they dominated the younger years with Marist performing a lot better in the older years. In the aggregate divisions our teams doing well include:

Team of the week is impossible to decide this week:

  • 9C, coached by Sam Noble won 7-0 in a great all-round team performance.
  • 8B had a great day, winning an incredible 10-2 at Indooroopilly, coached by Old Boys Riley Keen and Ryan Witzerman.
  • 5 Gold beat Villanova 5D 10-1 played very well in a dominant performance with Old Boy Dan Feltrin coaching.
  • 5C defeated St Peters 5C 11-1, well done boys and coaches Mr Ruiz and Tomas.

Most pleasing was the sportsmanship displayed across our teams where our opposition were clearly outclassed we were able to make sure we respected them throughout. This is a must for all Marist men. We respect ourselves, the officials and the opposition and the game itself.

1st XI v St Peter’s Lutheran College 3-1

This week we welcomed St Peter’s Lutheran College, with the 1st XI producing yet another promising victory, with a final score of 3-1. Under the guidance of coach Blair and assistant coach Willem, the boys have formed a strong bond as a team, with the right attitude, mentality and perseverance. We have now reached the halfway point of the season and cemented ourselves in the competition as a premiership-contending side. From the weekend, the first XI boys had to grind their way to a 1-0 lead by halftime. Early on in the second half Marist scored another extending our lead to 2-0. The next period of the game was an arm wrestle with the next goal belonging to St Peters, but Marist remained determined and focused to secure the win. It certainly wasn’t the strongest performance from the boys, conceding our first goal of the season, however, its near impossible for a good side to perform 100% each week, but what’s important is that we were able to adjust for this and move forward to focus on the task at hand and win the battle. A special mention must go to Giacomo Calabrese who came away with a hattrick on the day. We extend a thank you to all parents, your support and guidance to us boys is greatly cherished. Looking to this weekend, we face St Patrick’s away, hoping to continue our undefeated run, and set up the end of our season nicely.

Right attitude

Win the battle

Uniform - Socks

Boys have started cutting their socks or wearing other socks over their Marist socks. The uniform expectation is that uniforms are not altered in any way. I understand why boys want to use grip socks but if this is the case your under-socks must be the same colour as the Marist socks.

This weekend sees all matches at Marist against St Patrick’s College. This will mean a longer day for us, with the 1st XI kicking off at 1:15pm, but it also provides a great opportunity for younger boys to stay and support the flagship team in what will no doubt be another great game of football, and cheer on our premier team.

Water Polo

Mr Ryan Apps (Water Polo Coordinator)

On Friday 17 May the Marist College Open Water Polo team participated in the Brisbane Invitational water polo competition at Somerville House. Winning last year's event meant that Marist were the defending champions of the prestigious event.

The evening started well with a strong victory over Iona College. Taking the early lead the Marist players dominated the match.  The evening progressed in a similar manner moving through the next 3 pool games against Brisbane Boys College, Brisbane Grammar and Trinity College and with relative ease. Finishing top of their pool meant that Marist progressed to the final against the GPS champions Brisbane State High.

The game did not go to plan initially as the State High raced to a 2-0 lead and were very dominant while the boys in Blue and Gold were a bit clunky and disjointed. It was a seesawing and exciting affair with the lead changed hands 5 times during the match. Marist took some ascendency and wrestled back momentum and with 3 minutes left to lead 5-4. Not to be a game without tension State High scored and levelled the match 5 all with 2 minutes and 11 seconds left on the clock. From here a very strategic and calm Marist team worked the pool to precision and put the ball in the back of the goal to take the lead 6-5 with 1 minute left on the clock. From here Marist managed the final stages of the game won a well deserved Brisbane Invitational for the second year in a row.

Congratulations to Sean Bright who was player of the carnival and to all of the Year 11 players who have never lost a game of Water Polo for Marist College Ashgrove ever.

Student Achievements

Queensland All Schools Cross Country - Asher Parkin and Zac Milligan

Asher Parkin and Zac Milligan had a good weekend out at Tooloolawah at the QLD All Schools Short Course Champs. Both managed a first place in their respective events (Asher- U17, and Zac U16). Let’s hope they can repeat their performances at the AIC Championships next week. Both boys also won their Met North championship events this week and will be heading to the state titles.

National Triathlon Championships – Will Banner and Toby Banner

Will Banner and Toby Banner Will went at SSA National Triathlon Championships recently. Both did brilliantly and far exceeded their own expectations – Will placed 4th Nationally in his individual event and gold in the mixed team relay; and Toby placed 11th. This is a tremendous result, congratulations boys.

Marist Rugby Union

Mr Richard Graham – Director of Rugby / Track and Field

Super Saturday – June 1

Save the date!.....

Saturday 1 June is this year’s biggest sporting event.

Marist College vs St Laurence’s College in 30+ games of rugby union.

Old Boys’ Day.

Reunion Day.

Boarding Family Day.

Celebrations, prizes, giveaways, supporter’s bar………

……………..all together creates Super Saturday!!

Games on Des Connor Park, Field 7 and 8

For the remainder of the season, could I please ask all spectators viewing games on Des Connor Park, Fields 7 and 8, to stay on the Grevillea Road side of the field? Due to the ongoing maintenance work creating limited space, we want only the coaches and students to use the creek side in 2024. Thank you for your support.

Reminder For Spectators

I would like to remind all spectators of their responsibilities and behaviour when watching games here at the College or at our opposition’s venues. Young people learn best by example so I would ask that you -

  • Remember that the students participate in rugby union for their enjoyment, not yours.
  • Remember our coaches and referees are volunteers. They give their time and resources to ensure players can play the game.
  • This is a GAME!
  • The referees are human (and often volunteers).

Marist College has a zero-tolerance policy for any verbal and/or physical abuse by spectators. Should a spectator’s behaviour be deemed inappropriate, they will be removed from the grounds.

Round 4 vs St Peter’s Lutheran College

A glorious day of sunshine and plenty of colour and a carnival-like atmosphere with 8 different schools visiting the College across the day. Thanks to everyone for navigating a crazy schedule of games to make sure all the students played a game of rugby.

Congratulations to the Opens teams for a successful day of rugby and also for the manner in which they played. The 1st XV to 4th XV played physical attacking rugby, displaying some wonderful catch pass, genuine effort on effort, and a willingness to compete. Three different school across the four games provided some excitement and new challenges for the students. Thanks to St Peter’s, Ambrose Treacy College and Gregory Terrace.

It was good to see Nudgee College here at the College playing against our 5th XV to 8th XV. Some physical and competitive games for the teams were a great start to the day. We are striving to find games for all our students each weekend and the ability to find new opposition is a credit to the hard work behind the scenes by Mr Matt Millward.

The Year 10s had a dominant day. It was fantastic to watch some of the rugby on Hayden Oval, including the 3-way thriller between Marist 10D, Marist 10E and Iona 10D. Well done to everyone for the outstanding display of attacking rugby and the manner in which they played!

A mixed day for the Year 9 cohort who had five opposition schools play our five teams. Good results for our 9A and 9B teams, whilst our 9C and 9D teams suffered defeats to ATC 9As and Canterbury College respectively. Well done to the mighty 9Es who travelled in isolation out to Runcorn to play St Laurence’s 9Cs.

Similarly, the Year 8 teams faced five opposition schools spread across Brisbane. In what was a tough assignment for the Marist students, coaches and parents, the teams had a very successful day. The 8Es were particularly strong performers with a resounding win over SLC 8Ds. Well done to the 8Es and thank you to Mr Charlie Taylor for providing the boys with some wonderful coaching and a great experience.

The Year 7 teams had a busy and mostly enjoyable day. Every team had a game of rugby and the reports were positive. A tough day for the 7Cs who travelled to Runcorn to face the SLC 7B team. After suffering a few injuries and going down to 14 men, it proved to be a tough contest.

Congratulations to the Year 7 and 8 Marist teams for the manner in which they played their games and for their behaviour both on and off the field. I have had three separate emails from referees complimenting the Marist teams on their performances and behaviour across Saturday.

Five of the Year 5 and 6 teams played Villanova, whilst the Marist 5C team played ATC 5As and the Marist 5D team played SLC 5Cs. A mixed bag of results in the Year 6 cohort going down in the 6As and 6Cs but proving too strong in the 6Bs. All very close games and small margins proved the difference.

Year 5 was dominant across the year level. They continue to play some terrific Marist rugby with their Marist catch pass and their camaraderie proving a genuine point of difference.  Well done to all of the Year 5 teams.

It was nice to see Ryan Sleader (Year 8 Harold) make his referee debut taking control of the Marist 5D vs SLC 5C game. Ryan did a wonderful job and post-game received some excellent feedback and advice from former Test referee (and a grandparent of one of the SLC students), Barry Leask. Congratulations Ryan!

Congratulations to the students for the wins they had on the weekend, but more importantly for the manner in which they played their games. The mateship and teamwork was evident across all year levels.

Thanks to our outstanding coordinators and coaching staff for again preparing the boys well for AIC Round 4. The teams are performing well and it is so nice to see the training transferring consistently to performance. Well done to everyone!

Marist Rugby vs St Pat’s College (Round 5)

Marist College is visiting St Pat’s College this Saturday at Curlew Park, Shorncliffe for AIC Round 5.

For this weekend’s schedule and updates, please check the Marist app to get the latest details on all games. With only three rounds left, efforts are ongoing to ensure every student has a chance to play each weekend.

For instance, this Saturday, a Year 11 team will travel to Tennyson to compete against Gregory Terrace's 16B team. This is part of our strategy to manage the remaining weekends and ensure maximum participation.

Please note that all students are to arrive at least 45 minutes before their games unless instructed otherwise by your coach. Arrive in Marist rugby playing gear (no thongs or Birkenstocks).

Teams for this weekend will be announced Friday morning.

Rugby Union Training – Term 2

Please ensure you check the Marist app for the Year level training sessions scheduled in Term 2.

Additionally, refer to the Rugby Union Key Dates Calendar and AIC Draw in the Marist app for information on all games throughout the season.

Thank you to the GPS Rugby Union club for generously allowing our Year 10 cohort to train on their grounds. This has provided us with more field space, enhancing the overall training experience for our students. We are grateful for our strong connection with Jeeps and appreciate the opportunity to be part of the wider rugby community.

Student Dress

Whilst this is a relatively small problem, I want to remind all students of the dress code to games and during games, particularly given we are travelling to so many different schools each weekend.

Students travelling to games are to wear their Marist College Ashgrove rugby union uniform. During games, students are to wear their full Marist College Ashgrove rugby union uniform including rugby socks.

This can be done through your think smart App. Please help us by booking your court so that we can keep data on the court usage but also as we become busier avoiding the feeling of turning up and all courts are being used. For weekly bookings please let Jade know if you need help in being able to book this.

Super League News

If parents could let us know of how teams played away from Marist would be great.

Any photos of students that you would love to share would be greatly appreciated.

Home matches this last weekend were hard for all with most teams taking on the leaders in their divisions and from news reports were quite competitive but the opposition were just that little bit stronger.

Our Brisbane League Div 4 team is again showing the way with a huge points gap between themselves and the second ranked team after a huge win on Saturday.

Congratulations to our team of the week.

Our goal is to get as many teams up into the higher divisions to help push tennis here and the standard of our players.

We will soon be asking for nominations into the second Brisbane and Super League competition for 2024. Those who do nominate please keep in mind that AIC in the morning and fixtures in the afternoon is well rewarding but also draining in your energy levels. If playing and nominating for Super League or Brisbane League I would recommend having at least 3 players in your team so that you can share the workload.

Friday Fixtures Competition

Our point competition over the first two terms of this year are rapidly coming to a close with some big movements on the leader board with the absence of the top 3 players is now seeing a very congested board with a number of about 7 students still in the running for the awesome prize of the Head racquets, bag , balls and grips valued at well over $500. Congratulations to the winner and we will announce the winner after play on the 7th of June the last Friday for this term of fixtures.

Court Resurfacing Update

I am happy to announce that all six courts are up and in action, the courts have that new feeling, and I can personally say a lot nicer to play on. We do still have some small finishing touches to finish off, but I would like to thank all members again for their patience as these works dragged out with all the rain.

Holiday Clinics

We will be holding Holiday clinics for students who are not away on holidays and want to do something fun with games and prizes. These are for any student from Marist or surrounding schools who wish to participate.  So get your friends together for some fun.

These will run Monday – Wednesday in both weeks from 8 – 11am.

For booking please reference, clinic 1 : 24th – 26th June and clinic 2 : 1st – 3rd July.

These will be held in both weeks of the holidays with our normal tennis clinic, Reference booking  AIC 1 : 24th – 26th June and  AIC 2 : 1st – 3rd July

Sport Results - Round 4
