Foundation
What a busy few weeks we have been having in Foundation!
We enjoyed writing an invitation to our teddies to come along to a teddy bears picnic. We sang songs, described our teddies and played games together before enjoying some cordial and teddy bear biscuits.
Last week we celebrated our 100th day at school ! What an exciting day we had! It was lovely to see our families join us for our special assembly to begin the day. We sang our counting to 100 song, received certificates and smarties, did a Danny Go dance, then enjoyed parading around the classrooms to show our fantastic costumes for something to do with the number 100.
We hope you enjoy the photos of our special events!
Year 1
Athletics Carnival
What a fantastic day we had at the school Athletics Carnival! Year 1 students showed plenty of house spirit, cheering on their classmates and supporting Bridgidine, Delaney and Augustine houses. It was wonderful to see everyone having a go, encouraging one another and celebrating each other’s efforts. After practising our athletic skills during sport, the students were ready to put their skills into action. The beautiful weather made for a fantastic day!
Pay It Forward Challenge
We have some very generous Year 1 students! As part of the Year 11 Pay It Forward Challenge, our students collectively donated an incredible 159 items of clothing for people in need. Their generosity paid off, with Year 1 taking out the challenge for donating the most clothing of all the F–4 classes! We were very proud to celebrate our win with some delicious hot chips at lunchtime. A big thank you to our wonderful families for helping Year 1 make such a difference.
Mathematics
Our mathematicians have been busy skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s. Students are becoming experts at spotting the patterns in numbers and can even use the pattern to work out what numbers come next. There has been lots of counting, thinking and pattern spotting happening in our classroom!
Literacy
Our persuasive writing unit has been lots of fun! Students have been learning how to share their opinions and provide reasons to convince their readers. Some students have been particularly passionate about persuading their classmates to play their favourite games. We certainly have some budding writers in Year 1!
Science
In Science, we have been exploring the properties of different materials and thinking about why some materials are better suited to particular purposes. The students loved putting their knowledge into action during our Three Little Pigs design challenge. They had to think like engineers and design a house that could withstand the Big Bad Wolf!
Year 2
We are coming to the end of our mathematics topic on Multiplication and Division. Throughout this unit, we begin each lesson with a daily review, where we revisit previous topics and skills as well as building our fluency on addition and subtraction problems. During the lessons students have been developing their understanding of making equal groups, sharing quantities equally and recognising the connection between multiplication and division. Students have also been building their fluency with times tables and applying their knowledge to solve a range of worded problems.
It has been wonderful to see students using practical materials, drawings and different strategies to explain their thinking and solve problems. We encourage students to continue practising their times tables at home to build their confidence and fluency.
Years 3
Our Year 3 students have been very busy telling the time in maths. They are working towards reading an analog clock to the minute and writing this in digital form. Students have made their own clocks to help tell the time. All students were given a few Tic Toc biscuits to read and record the times before having their tasty treat. Our upcoming topic will be 3D objects, where we will be building three-dimensional objects from paper nets and matchsticks with playdough, comparing strengths of different shapes and describing the features of these shapes.
In science, Mrs Grabham has been running experiments, turning solids into liquids. This included ice, a hard lolly and chocolate.
In literature, we have finished The Iron Man novel and have now begun Charlotte's Web. Students are already incredibly engaged in this classic children's novel.
In spelling, we have focused on the /ar/ sound, where we could use 'ar' or 'a'. We have also learnt about about the /or/ sound and the possible spelling options being 'or', 'au', 'ore' and 'aw'. Students are applying their spelling rules to figure out which option to use.
Year 4
Science: Motion
This term, we have been learning about motion and exploring the different forces that affect the way objects move. We have focused on force, gravity and air resistance, investigating how these forces can make objects speed up, slow down, stop or change direction.
Through a range of hands-on investigations, we have been making predictions, testing our ideas and observing what happens. We explored how gravity pulls objects towards the Earth and how air resistance can slow objects as they move through the air.
We have also been developing our ability to use scientific vocabulary and evidence to explain our observations. It has been wonderful to see students becoming curious scientists as they ask questions, make predictions and explain how forces affect motion.
