Narrative Writing

Students have been thoroughly enjoying free-choice narrative writing during any spare classroom time. It has been wonderful to see their creativity, imagination and enthusiasm for writing continue to grow. Below is a narrative that one of our students is extremely proud of and was excited to share with our school community.

“Good morning!” Layla shouted eagerly from her bedroom, as she got up to grab some pancakes from the kitchen, with Cooper slowly walking behind her. “

So, what are your plans for today?” mumbled Mum with coffee dripping down from her mug.

“I don't know, probably going for a walk in the forest, and maybe going to climb a tree or two,” replied Cooper.

“And you Layla?” asked Mum.

“Probably going to annoy Cooper or something along the lines of that” replied Layla. Once they finished eating their breakfast, the kids got ready and headed out to the forest.

The forest was old, quiet and mysterious. It took them around five minutes to reach the path, and as they were walking, they came upon a tree that didn't look right. It looked fake – like it was made out of metal. Cooper pulled out his phone and took a photo and sent it to Google Search to find out what type of tree it was. The results came back, and it said that it was most likely a fake, or a new – unidentified- species. They were filled with excitement as they realised they might have found somebody's hidden base or a new species of tree that they could name after themselves.

They decided to investigate the tree further to see which one it was, a hidden base or a new species. As they looked closer, they saw a bit of silver, like metal. They walked around the tree and found a little, green door handle. The tall door was very camouflaged and had specks of silver. There was even a little window covered in moss and leaves. They yanked on the door handle and it swung open with a horrible screech making them jump back and cover their ears with their hands.

They slowly walked in and saw a little table and chair, and even a little bowl of porridge just sitting there in the middle of the tree. There was a big purple portal looking thing. They scooted around the table and chair to the portal and Layla insisted that Cooper goes first. He stuck his finger into the portal. They were amazed by the sight and they both held hands and jumped in together with fear- filled eyes. They fell down to the ground onto a bush. Cooper jumped up first with Layla soon after.

They arrived in a world where everything was upside down. They were amazed by the sight and reached up for a tree. They discovered that an apple fell the opposite way to how it’s supposed to. They decided to go test a swing set. They ran over to the swings and tried to stand on it, but fell off into a bush. They helped each other up and looked up at the toilets, and saw people walking around! They called out to the people, the people looked up, didn't see them and continued walking to their cars and to the playground to pick up their children.

They thought of a plan to get to the people to get them and get them down from the sky. Cooper lifted Layla, and she grabbed on to the top of a tree and pulled herself up. She fell down onto the actual world with trees on the ground, not in the sky! She called for Cooper, with no response. She was worried that he wouldn’t come down, when suddenly, he fell down onto the ground next to Layla. She jumped back and tripped on a rock. Once she got back up, they realised that this is the park across from their school. They ran to the bus stop and got onto a bus that went to the same street as their house.

They sat in the bus and they realised that it was still light outside as it was when they left. When they usually get home it is dark and their mum is in bed. They got off the bus at their stop and raced down the street to their house and walked inside to find their Mum still drinking her coffee from this morning.
