Students & Learning

Classroom Learning with 2K

This week, students explored how to identify and compare settings in a story as part of our ongoing Bob Graham author study.

So far, we have enjoyed reading and discussing:

  • How the Sun Got to Coco’s House and How to Heal a Broken Wing
  • Concrete Garden and Jigsaw
  • Max and Queenie the Bantam

For this lesson, we focused on our final text, Queenie the Bantam. Students learned how to describe and compare the farm and city settings using key details from the story.

Together, we:

  • Identified features of each setting (e.g. busy roads and crowded houses in the city, open space and grass on the farm)
  • Discussed similarities and differences between the two environments
  • Used descriptive language to explain which setting might suit different animals and why

Students then used a clear sentence structure to write their own comparisons:

The farm is ____, but the city is ____. However, both ____.

This helped them organise their thinking and clearly communicate their ideas.

In the photos, you will see examples of students’ workbook writing, where they have applied their understanding by comparing the two settings using details from the text.

This learning builds important comprehension skills, including analysing texts and understanding how authors use settings to shape a story.
