May – The Month of Mary: Honouring Our Lady and celebrating Mothers in Our Community

In the Catholic tradition, the month of May holds a special and sacred place as we honour Mary, the Mother of Jesus. Throughout history, May has been dedicated to Mary as a time of prayer, reflection and gratitude for her example of faith, courage and love. As a community named in honour of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, this month carries particular meaning for us, inviting us to deepen our connection with Mary and to reflect on the qualities she models for us each day.
Mary’s story is one of trust and faithfulness. When faced with uncertainty, she responded with openness to God’s call, showing courage, humility and unwavering love. These qualities continue to inspire us as a community. In classrooms, on the playground and in our relationships with one another, we are called to reflect Mary’s gentleness, patience and willingness to serve others.

As Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Mary is known as a protector and guide, offering comfort and hope to those who seek her care. The Carmelite tradition reminds us of the importance of contemplation; taking time to pause, pray and listen for God in the busyness of our lives. During May, many of our classes will participate in Marian prayers, create prayer spaces, and reflect on Mary’s role in the life of Jesus and in our own faith journeys.
May is also a time when we celebrate Mother’s Day, providing a beautiful opportunity to honour the many women who nurture, guide and support the young people in our lives. While Mother’s Day traditionally celebrates mothers, it is also a moment to acknowledge the many forms of motherly care present in our community; grandmothers, aunties, carers, stepmothers, older sisters, mentors and teachers. Each of these women plays a significant role in shaping the lives of our students through love, encouragement and steadfast presence.
For some, Mother’s Day can bring mixed emotions of joy and gratitude alongside memories, longing or loss. As a faith community, we hold space for all experiences, remembering those who are no longer with us and offering prayers of comfort and peace.
Reflection

As we journey through May, we are invited to pause and consider how Mary’s example lives within us. In moments of challenge, do we respond with patience and trust? In moments of need, do we offer kindness and compassion to those around us?
Mary reminds us that greatness is often found in quiet acts of service - listening to a friend, supporting a classmate, showing gratitude to those who care for us, and noticing when someone needs encouragement.
This May, may we take time to:
May Mary, Our Lady of Mount Carmel, watch over our college community and guide us to live with faith, compassion and courage.
