BSC Swimming Carnival
With a splendid day on the cards, the House Swimming Carnival was set to be an entertaining spectacle. Our Year 7s had been prepping in the pool for two weeks, in an attempt to make a good first impression with their fellow House competitors. There were also whispers that the staff were worried about holding onto their title in the Staff vs Students swimming competition, with rumours running rampant amongst staff and students alike. The day had finally come…. Friday the 16th of February.
As students gathered in their respective House areas, our Janet Sturgeon and Andrew Campbell competitors began preparing for their race. The race for the Andrew Campbell Shield began first, with Evalyn Hayward looking to take her 3rd victory in a row. However, this would not be easy, as young guns Baxter White, Louis Welsh and Maddison Wade, were hot on Evalyn’s heels. Louis turned on the jets, coming a close second, but was unfortunately unable able to overtake the now three-time winner, Evalyn Hayward. With Evalyn not eligible to compete for the Andrew Campbell Shield next year, could Louis Welsh step up to claim victory?
The next race was the Janet Sturgeon Cup. Senior students, Charlotte Sporton and Matilda Venes, were determined to walk away with this year’s cup, both pushing hard. Milly Kerr and Meg Lyons also put in a fierce effort, however none were able to overcome Evalyn’s astonishing performance.
The rest of the day saw many tough competitors, including the classic Tom Lyons and Cooper Cahill clash, which saw Tom win Freestyle, while Cooper took away the Backstroke crown. There were also new rivalries, in the form of Milly Kerr, Lucy Hayward and Maddison Wade, in the 13-year-old age group.
Thanks to the wonderful efforts from all House Captains, teams were assembled for both the Medley and Freestyle relays. Notable performances from Kambara and Wandarra were a recurring theme throughout the day, while Tanaranga and Kambara needed a tie breaker. This resulted in Tom Lyons and Evalyn Hayward going head-to-head in a 50m Freestyle challenge, with Tom walking away with the win.
While the results were being tallied by our Sports Trak software team, Alysha O’Connor, Nate Burrill, Rakai Frisby and Errol Hammond, the staff rallied their relay team in preparation for their race against the Year 12s.
The students, led by Reagan Fulford, were confident, with Eric Wilkinson fancying his chances due to his athletic ability. Little did the students know, that the new staff recruits would be the decider in this race. As the race started, Riley Burrill was able to edge in front of Mr Webb, taking an early but marginal lead. This however was short lived, as the new recruits would soon turn the tide of the race. Miss Liddicoat, Mr Wright and Mr Severino all put in star performances, giving the staff a resounding victory.
House results, in the end, favoured Kambara (Green House), who scored 276 points, followed closely by Wandarra (Blue House) who achieved 272 points.
Thank you to the Beaufort Swimming Pool and also Friends of the Pool, for hosting a fantastic carnival. Much appreciation to the staff and student helpers for assisting with the morning's set-up and the smooth running of the day. Finally, thank you to the families and carers who showed up to support our wonderful students, who all did a superb job.
Students displayed the following Habits of Mind throughout the day...
Many of our students displayed these Habits outstandingly well throughout the course of the day and should be congratulated on not only their efforts, but also their behaviour.
