Year 5/6 Team News

with Laura, Christina, Emil, Molly, Bianca I, Kayleen, Steven & Melati

Hello Year 5/6 families,

Welcome Back

Another year, another bunch of great Willy Kids enter the Gallery and Deck classrooms. It has been amazing to see how much they’ve grown over the holidays. We’ve been brought up to speed on summer holidays, Christmas presents, new pets and the list of students who have snaffled Taylor Swift tickets. Chatter over snack and lunch tells us that our Grade 5/6 students are feeling comfortable and happy to be back in the company of friends.

Willy Learning

These first two weeks of school have been dedicated to administration and setting up positive classroom environments. Classes have drafted their classroom agreements to reflect our school values. Stationery has been distributed. Games have been played and interschool sports have been chosen. We have introduced our class novel and begun the process of choosing book club texts. We commence our academic timetable (Reading, Writing, Spelling, Maths and Inquiry) next week.

Homework

This Friday students will receive their first piece of homework for the year. It is fairly self-explanatory and students will be taken through the requirements and expectations for this. Homework will be handed out on a Friday and due back the following Friday unless special events require a change. Please contact your child’s classroom teacher if you have any questions about the homework. Students who are having difficulty with homework are encouraged to see their classroom teacher well before the homework is due. Part of the homework will be “Book Club”. With their book clubs, students will select the number of pages they must read and will be notified of the book club task that they will need to complete in their homework book. The Book Club novel must be well-cared-for and returned to school each Friday.

Reminders:

  • Please continue to monitor Compass for alerts and updates, In particular, please ensure you respond to the Beach Program and Melbourne Aquarium events which are coming up. Please note, in the “Resources” tab on the Beach program event, you can find a link to volunteer to walk to and from the beach with your child’s class. There is no limit on the number of parents who can assist with this.
  • If you think you might like to volunteer on excursions and events this year, please ensure that you have arranged a valid Working With Children Check and complete the school’s online induction module.
  • Please return the Local Walk/Photograph Permission/ICT Forms as soon as possible.
