Year Four Team News

with Rebecca, Brittlee, Toni & Matt

Hello Year Four families,

We welcome you all back for the 2024 school year. Your amazing and resilient Willy Kids have made a sensational start to the year and we couldn’t be more proud of them.

Fortnightly Curriculum Focus

Literacy: This fortnight has begun with identifying and practising positive reading behaviours. Students will utilise their positive reading behaviours and their Reader’s Notebook. In Writing, students have begun the writing process by drafting a procedural text. This will form the first of their published pieces. They have also begun work on their Writer’s Notebook. This book encourages students to value and have ownership of their writing.

Numeracy: For the first two weeks of the year we have been focussing on Place Value. In weeks three and four we will be looking at Addition. Alongside our topics, the students will also be working through mathematical problem based questions to improve their knowledge and skills of each topic.

Inquiry: Like every year, we begin Term 1 with our whole-school unit: ‘Learning to Learn, Learning to Be’. This has been a great chance to build relationships between students and teachers, and to begin developing our classroom routines and expectations.

iPad Agreements

We are still waiting for all signed iPad Agreements to be returned before we can begin our digital learning program. Once all are returned, our focus will be on safe and responsible usage and setting up our Google Classroom platform for the year.

Mad About Science Incursion

On Monday the 12th of February we will be attending the Mad About Science incursion. As part of the year 4 science based unit of inquiry this term, our students will take part in an incursion run by Mad About Science titled 'The Matter of Matter'. The incursion involves discussions, ‘hands on activities' and a variety of demonstrations including how matter changes state when heat is applied and removed.

Beach Program 2024

In week 3, the Grade 4G and 4E and week 5 Grade 4S classes will be taking part in our cold water swimming program, at Williamstown Beach Surf Lifesaving Club. The program aims to enhance students' understanding of different open water environments. The course covers:

  • Personal Safety and Environmental Awareness
  • Survival Skills
  • Rescue Skills/ Emergency Response
  • Open water swimming skills.

The program will run from 10:00am - 2:30pm. Students are to arrive at school at normal time and will walk to the Life Saving Club with their teacher.

Bike Education

We are excited to announce that our students will be participating in Bike Education in Term 1. Each class will spend two days learning new skills and the importance of riding their bikes safely in the community. We ask that students bring their own bikes to school on the days that their class has Bike Ed. The program will be run on the following dates:

4G - 19th and 21st of February

4S - 4th and 6th of March

4E - 26th and 28th of February

If you have any questions about Bike Education, please contact your child's teacher.

All incursions/excursion reuire permission and payment to be completed in Compass.

We look forward to another great fortnight with our super Grade Four cohort and meeting with you all next week at Meet the Teacher evening.
