Investigating Land Use Change in Tarneit
Our Year 12 Geography students recently undertook a field study across Tarneit and the surrounding region to investigate the impacts of land use change. With the guiding research question ‘To what extent has the land use change in Tarneit incorporated principles of sustainable urban development as a Major Activity Centre?’, students explored how this rapidly growing area has transformed from agricultural land to a thriving urban centre.
Tarneit’s landscape has changed significantly over the past few decades, shifting from open farmland to a suburban growth corridor featuring residential developments, commercial precincts, and community infrastructure. As part of their study, students gathered primary and secondary data on key urban planning principles, including sustainability, connectivity, accessibility, health and safety, and transportation. They assessed the effectiveness of infrastructure and amenities in supporting a liveable and sustainable urban environment.
Throughout the day, students engaged with their surroundings in a meaningful way, demonstrating curiosity and critical thinking. Their positive representation of our college in the wider community was commendable. This hands-on learning experience not only deepened their understanding of urban geography but also strengthened their ability to evaluate real-world planning and development strategies in the context of their own community.
We look forward to seeing their findings and analysis in the coming weeks!
