Morse Code

Year 11 Modern History Class Activity

Year 11 Modern History students have recently been studying World War I, including the ANZACs in Gallipoli. Morse Code played a crucial role in military communications during World War I and II, and in Modern History, students learn aspects of how people operated and functioned throughout these difficult moments in time, particularly when communicating vital information.

Students were given the Morse Code alphabet, a mini morse code kit, and some flashlights. In groups students had to communicate a word or sentence via morse code to another group in the classroom, while the receiving group had to decipher the code, and see if they deciphered it correctly.

This was a fun activity that helped students contextualise some of the complexities of communication during the World Wars.
