On Thursday 20th February, everyone enjoyed our annual swimming carnival. It was a warm day and lots of students dressed in their house colours. Our Year 12 students had some very creative costumes. Thanks to the VCE VM students and helpers for the fabulous BBQ, cool drinks and sweet treats. Well done to Tarra house for winning on the day.
The Year 10 Automotive class has shifted gears with an exciting hands-on learning experience—1/8 scale radio-controlled (RC) buggies! This innovative approach allows students to develop real-world automotive skills while engaging in an interactive and competitive classroom environment.
Learning Through Racing
Instead of just reading about vehicle mechanics, students apply their knowledge by building, tuning, and maintaining RC buggies. Covering both nitro and electric models, the course introduces concepts such as:
Hands-On Engagement
Working in groups, students are responsible for an RC buggy, fostering teamwork and problem-solving as they build and maintain, diagnose issues and optimise performance. Through practical lessons, they gain an appreciation for precision engineering and mechanical troubleshooting—skills directly transferable to full-scale automotive careers.
The Ultimate Test: Race Day!
The program culminates in an exciting race day, where students put their skills to the test at the local Eagle Point RC track. This event reinforces lessons on tuning and strategy while promoting healthy competition and camaraderie.
By bringing RC racing into the classroom, Bairnsdale Secondary College is accelerating student engagement and preparing the next generation of automotive enthusiasts and engineers. Who knew learning could be this fast and fun?
What do you do with your used cooking oil?
Imagine if you were in the food and hospitality industry - what would you do with all that old oil that you used for deep frying all those hot chips, fried fish, chicken schnitzels? You may be aware that used cooking oil is collected from establishments that cook fried food by companies that convert it to biodiesel for use largely in tractors and other farming machinery.
Year 12 Chemistry students used clean samples of canola oil to convert to biodiesel. Testing confirmed that we had manufactured a very viable and functional product.
SPARKS is a group of university students that volunteer to run a camp that aims to get high school students enthusiastic about future careers in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
The physics students were engaged in an incursion where they were asked to “think like engineers”. They had to design a delivery system for aid to disaster survivors in hard to access locations - a cheap, reliable parachute that will deliver food and fragile medicines to people in need.

As Australian students return to school, many are not just navigating new classrooms and teachers — but also a digital world with increasingly complex challenges.
