Grade 1

Explore the Learning in Grade 1

Literacy

In Literacy, students have concluded their work on the Core Knowledge unit, 'Continents, Countries and Maps.' They will review this content, with a focus on integrating their syntax and grammar knowledge, through completing writing tasks that require students to expand simple sentences (when? who/what? where?) to illustrate their knowledge of the unit. They will begin a new unit, 'Mesopotamia,' in Week 9.

Phonics, Handwriting and Reading Fluency

The students are consolidating their knowledge of taught sounds, /oe/ and /ee/, in the reading and spelling of words. They are continuing to work on correct letter formation for words linked to those taught in phonics.  The students will build their reading fluency through repeated reading each day with a partner, as well as choral reading with their whole class, and echo reading, where they repeat after their teacher reads.

Numeracy

The students will be working on consolidating their knowledge of comparing 2 digit numbers, place value facts for 2 digit numbers and strategies for crossing decades.
