Literacy
In Literacy, students are concluding their Core Knowledge unit, "Let's Explore our World." The students will be learning about Australia, including native Australian animals such as kangaroos and koalas and landmarks such as the Sydney Opera House and Uluru. They will conclude the unit by comparing and contrasting the continents they have learned about with Australia and our local community.
Phonics, Handwriting and Reading Fluency
The Preps have now completed the third set of sounds in Phonics Plus: k, e, r, u. The students have been taught to read these sounds, write the letters and segment and blend short words and nonwords using these sounds and previously taught sounds, such as kit, med, rup. The Preps will now move onto a review of the first three sets of sounds in Phonics Plus and work on these for the remainder of the term.
Syntax and Grammar
The Preps will be working on identifying nouns (names of people, places and things) and verbs (doing words). The students will also be learning to expand simple sentences orally, using 'where' and 'when' - eg. In the morning, Edward went for a walk.
Numeracy
The Preps are continuing to learn the correct formation of numerals 0-9, with a focus on 7, 8 and 9 for the next two weeks. The students are also learning to subitise numbers to six on dice, and numbers to 10 represented on tens frames.
