WAKAKIRRI 2024 – Expression of interest

Dear Parents and students,

Wakakirri is a performing Arts festival where a story is told on stage in an imaginative way using music, dance, movement, acting, sets, props, costumes and prerecorded music (similar to Rock Eisteddfod). Children perform in front of a panel of judges and an audience of family and friends at Frankston Arts Centre in August against other schools in Victoria.  After this performance, a few schools are selected to go to an awards night in September.  Croydon Hills Primary School has been involved with Wakakirri since 1999 and has always been very successful and most enjoyable for all involved.  The emphasis is not on dancing ability or extravagant sets and props, but telling a story with a message and reusing and recycling wherever possible.  If students would not like to perform on stage but would like to be part of a back stage crew, you can also be involved backstage. We need reliable people to run back stage and move props.

WHEN do we do Wakakirri?  Wakakirri practices are totally outside of school hours. They will be on a MONDAY night after school from 3.30- 5pm in the CHPS Performing Arts Centre.  Practises will commence later in  term 1.

WHAT do I have to be committed to?  Students must attend all practices, a full dress (in CHPS gym) and the Heat at Frankston Arts Centre in August.  There is also a possibility of performing at an Awards night in September.

HOW much is Wakakirri?  The cost of Wakakirri is $98 this subsidises:

  • $39 entrance fee to Wakakirri
  • Bus to heat in Frankston
  • Costumes, sets, props & make up
  • HR costs associated for all after school rehearsals and the day at the Theatre.

PARENT involvement:  Wakakirri runs entirely on parent helpers.  We would love you to help in any way you can.   If you can help with costumes, hair, make up, sets, props or transportation of props to the venue I would love to hear from you via email:  roslawrence@optusnet.com.au

WHAT to do now? If your child would like to be involved in Wakakirri please RSVP via google form. https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe7RZC8EBRuydz2Pb1PCj4DUJUHfPVI_WHPPKqe1VHvwZSUSw/viewform
