Civics and Citizen Class

Year 7 Students Welcome Mrs Angela Toppin to Class

On Tuesday 27 February, we welcomed Mrs Angela Toppin – newly elected mayor – to our Year 7 Civics and Citizen class. It was an honour to congratulate her on her second term as the first female mayor in the Mareeba Shire. She was welcomed by Jessica Bielienkova.

Our assessment is identifying something that needs to change for the better in our community or country. To enact this change, students are lobbying a member of parliament to initiate discussion on this matter of importance by writing a letter to parliament.

Mrs Toppin explained to us her role and duties, taught us about local laws and how her passion for the community drives her to make a positive change. She shared her most recent successes and challenges with us and showed a map to demonstrate how vast our shire stretches.

Students could ask questions like: “What is the most difficult task you had to fulfil so far?” or “What is the most expensive project that council had to fund?” and “What exactly is the process followed by council to ensure change takes place?”

Mrs Toppin was thanked by Leigh Spadina and Jana Bordeos who gifted her with a small token of our appreciation.
