Arts and LOTE

Ms Blayse Melvin, Middle Leader Arts and LOTE

Throughout Term 1, the Arts department has been bustling with a myriad of excursions, incursions, and collaborations both within our school and in the local community.

Exciting things have been happening in Music this term! At the start of March, we sent five students to Cairns for the North Queensland State Honours Ensemble Program. Amalia Peirce, James Fowler and Thomas Fenner played in the wind ensemble, while Imogen Oiderman and Kira Feeney sang in the vocal ensemble. These students joined 190 other students from schools all around the Far North region and learnt some amazing repertoire from professional conductors from the Griffith Conservatorium of Music. Their final performance was incredibly impressive and they can all be very proud of their accomplishments! Students in Grades 7-10 will have another opportunity to take part in the Cairns based program in early August, please email Ms Kitchiner for more details!

Our Senior Music in Practice students have been studying the "Music of Today" and are looking forward to completing a workshop in Week 10 with industry professional Mark Williams from Pacific Music. We will be learning all about operating a sound desk, correct microphone techniques and how to create the perfect mix for a live music event. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to be engaged in and will help to develop a student run team of sound engineers for future events.

We have had some great live performances throughout the year from Grades 8 -11 and even in our lunchtime Jam at the Junction concert. Our Liturgy Band has performed at our Opening Mass and Ash Wednesday liturgies and are busily preparing for our creative Easter Liturgy on the last day of term. Una Voce are also busily preparing for next term's Anzac Day ceremony and the Cairns Eisteddfod in Week 10 of Term Two!

There is definitely no shortage of ways to be involved with Music this year! For more information on any of the above, please see Ms Kitchiner in the Music Room at Recess 2.

In Visual Art, students have been immersed in a range of thrilling projects. Among them, our Year 10 Visual Arts students have been channelling their creativity into designing skateboards. These unique creations will take centre stage at our upcoming Arts Exhibition night in Term 3.

In drama this term the Year 8 Students have been studying Fractured Fairy tales. Students have been engaged in the unit and have presented their ‘Fractured Fairy Tale Tableaus’. Check out some of our Year 8s below. As we finish our elective rotations in junior years, we're very proud of our Year 7 and 8 students for completing their first term of French. To celebrate, we enjoyed French food and watched a French movie in our final lesson.

Looking forward, our Cultural Captains have planned exciting arts activities for each term. These will happen during lunchtime, so watch out for announcements at the start of Term 2. Come join us as we explore and celebrate cultural diversity together!

Kind regards,
