The most beautiful world is always entered through the imagination’. – Helen Keller

‘Let your imagination go wild – the world is your canvas!’ – Yayoi Kusama

This term the grade 2 students are getting the chance to unleash their inner architects! From sketching unique windows and doors to designing imaginative roof styles, we’ve been exploring the essential elements that make a house truly special.

After carefully selecting the perfect features for their dream home, students moved on to the next big step: creating their own house blueprint!

In the next few weeks students will start to bring their designs to life and create their own paper bag houses.

See a selection of designs created by students in grade 2. Students were able to choose their favourite designs when creating their house blueprint.

Grade 4 students have been diving into the exciting world of balance in art! As part of their study, they learned how to create balance using shapes, colours and patterns to make artwork feel harmonious and visually appealing.

Students created colourful backgrounds for a radial print, where the design radiates out from a central point, like the petals of a flower or the spokes of a wheel. Students carefully balanced bold colours and repeating patterns to create eye-catching backgrounds that will complement their radial designs to be printed over the background. It was inspiring to see the creativity and thoughtfulness that went into each piece, as the students explored how to achieve a sense of symmetry and movement within their artwork. The results were bright, vibrant, and full of energy, reflecting their understanding of balance and the joy they found in artistic expression.

Chloe from 4a showed different types of balance in her visual representations.

In grade six we’ve been diving into the world of Jean-Michel Basquiat, a renowned artist whose work blends raw energy, symbolism, and vibrant colours. Basquiat's art often features powerful symbols, abstract figures, and bold, expressive strokes. His work challenges us to think about art in new ways, encouraging us to explore themes like identity and culture. In class, we’ve been focusing on how Basquiat used symbols to communicate deep meanings. For example, we’ve learned how he often included crowns to represent power and kingship, skulls to reflect the human experience, and words or phrases that convey emotions or messages. We have created our own symbols reflecting personal meaning and stories using the sgraffito technique. After studying Basquiat’s techniques, we’ve moved on to an exciting hands-on project where we will create portraits with complementary colour backgrounds. Complementary colours are pairs of colours that sit opposite each other on the colour wheel, like blue and orange, red and green, or yellow and purple. These colour combinations make each other "pop" and create dynamic contrasts, just like Basquiat’s bold use of colour. Please enjoy some of the backgrounds that we have started creating.

Year 1

Observational drawings of local leaf species

This activity provides an opportunity for students to explore the appearance of leaves

 from their local natural environment.

It is essential that the leaves observed are native to the local area, as later in the program this will provide a link to the concept of the students’ work and that of other artists.
