CURRICULUM FOCUS

In Reading this week we will begin learning about predicting before reading a text.

VOCABULARY

Predicting: when we predict we are making a good guess about what we think might happen in a book based on the title and other clues on the front cover such as the picture.

Title: name of the book

ACTIVITIES YOU CAN DO AT HOME TO SUPPORT YOUR CHILD'S LEARNING

Using a book that your child hasn’t read (e.g. a dot book from their blue satchel or a picture story book you have at home or a book from the library) complete the following:

  1. Read the title to your child
  2. Ask your child what they can see is happening in the picture on the front cover
  3. Ask your child to make a prediction of what they think will happen in the book based on the clues from the front cover (using the title or the pictures or both)
  4. Your child could then draw their prediction or say it to you or another person in your household.
