Magistrates' Court Legal Studies Excursion

On 17th April the Year 11 Legal Studies class went to the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court. We had the opportunity to witness real court proceedings. Some of the cases we witnessed included adjournments, bail applications and summary offence hearings such as theft and assault.

One case required extra consideration like having an interpreter present to help the defendant in the courtroom when hearing their case.

We were also briefed before and after our court observations by the Deputy Chief Magistrate Timothy Bourke.  He shared with us his career pathway into law as a mature age student and his experiences in criminal law. We also had the chance to ask questions about any case we witnessed during the day.

Overall it was a great day of learning and experiencing the court proceedings.  We can now apply this knowledge to our class work.
