Student Work Experience Report

My name is Thenujee Samarathunga. I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to gain one week of work experience at the Forest Hill Police Station. During this work experience week, I learned a lot about the procedures of the police. During the first two days I observed how complaints were collected, written down and filed into investigations, as well as how CCTV footage from across Victoria may be used for police work, particularly in highway patrol in the main watch out room. On the third day, I was given the opportunity to review pending and completed investigations, as well as complete some police paperwork.

On the fourth day I was fortunate enough to be invited on a trip to investigate a crime scene with Crime Officers, who taught me how to obtain fingerprints and how they may be identified and used as evidence. Finally, on Friday I had the opportunity to attend many presentations against drugs and alcohol in a secondary school with a Senior preventative police officer. Overall, this week was an incredible opportunity whether you are interested in working with the police or in the defence industry. My most important step was to ask questions and the police were extremely kind and willing to answer every question that I had. Always walk about, interact and have fun. Overall, it was a wonderful experience.

What is a midwife?

You don’t need to be married or even be a woman to be a midwife, but you do need to be fascinated by the miracle of birth. Midwives practice midwifery, the profession that provides care, education, advice, and support to women and their families during pregnancy, labour and birth. They also provide postnatal care to women and babies in the early weeks following birth.

What skills and strengths are needed?

Midwives must be good communicators who can work as part of a team. They need to use initiative and take responsibility in emergencies, so being able to work under pressure in a stressful environment is key.

What are the pathways?

You usually have to study midwifery at university as either a single degree or a double degree (usually combined with nursing). If you’re already a registered nurse, you can become a midwife through postgraduate study.
