Message from our Principal

Claudia Johnson

Acting Principal

As we wrap up an eventful Term 2, I want to extend a warm thank you to our amazing students, dedicated staff, and supportive families.

This term we had Year 10 and Year 11 mid-year exams, the General Assessment Test for our students undertaking a Year 12 subject, the Year 12 formal, the Athletics Carnival and sports events, Year 10 work experience, theatre sports competition, outdoor education camps, incursions on bullying prevention, Cybersafety, respectful relationships and consent, community events such as Casual Clothes day, and wonderful cultural events including the Chamber Concert, Bands Night, drama performance evening and IDAHOBIT Day –  BSC is a busy and dynamic environment!

School for Student Leadership - Alpine School

I would like to highlight the exceptional achievements of our six Year 9 students who participated in the School for Student Leadership at the Alpine School.

Melissa Brown and I recently visited Don Valley to witness their Lorax-themed community project aimed at helping those in our local Brunswick community facing food insecurity. After spending nine weeks away from home and attending classes six days a week, the growth in these students' confidence and leadership skills has been truly inspiring.

I extend special thanks to Melissa Brown for her unwavering support of these students and her leadership in this program.

Basketball Academy

In other exciting news, our Basketball Academy, led by Mike Torres, will begin next term, engaging around 70 students two mornings per week starting in Week 2.

Professional Learning

Our staff have also been busy with professional learning sessions covering a range of topics including modifying learning activities, managing behaviour in the classroom, common learning difficulties, continuous reporting, schoolwork moderation, and exploring ChatGPT and authentication.

This ongoing commitment to our practice is part of what makes Brunswick teachers and our Brunswick learning community such an innovative place to learn.

A special thank you to a bunch of Year 10 students who role-played some professional learning videos for staff on how to support young people experiencing inattention, distraction and dysregulation.

Staffing changes

There are some staffing changes for Term 3. We welcome back Stephen Milligan to the English Learning Area and Hilary Gilbert to Health & PE. We farewell Denzel More who replaced Hilary but hope to see him as a CRT as he continues to pursue his sporting goals. Wanling Zhong has commenced her family leave and is replaced by Tianshin Lu. Henry Coard is leaving to start a new role with Werribee Secondary College and we welcome William Howard to the Science faculty. Eliza Cole is departing for Lowther Hall and is replaced by Jack Collins as Head of Maths. Richa Pandey from the Science Learning Area will work much closer to home and Chloe Wilmot and Nikki Brooks (Visual Arts Learning Area) are both moving on to other pursuits.

We wish all the very best for Denzel, Wanling, Henry, Eliza, Richa, Chloe and Nikki.

Community fundraising

The Student Representative Council, students, families and staff can be very proud of our fundraising efforts this year to date.

The entire school community has wholeheartedly embraced this year’s BSC fundraising cause - the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. This foundation plays a crucial role in improving literacy outcomes for Indigenous children in remote communities right across Australia.

The SRC and student body are excited to continue this fundraising effort into Terms 3 and 4, and have a target of raising $10,000 for the year.  All funds raised will be presented to the ILF at the end of Term 4.
