School Highlights

Official Opening of The HIVE

In March this year, we proudly celebrated the official opening of our new STEAM and Library Centre - The HIVE.

Designed with learning, innovation and entrepreneurship in mind, this three-level state-of-the-art centre offers contemporary facilities for science, robotics, systems engineering, media and more. It also includes casual learning and project collaboration areas for all learners across the School.

The HIVE incorporates sustainability features such as solar control with integrated louvres, recycled water for toilet flushing, and renewable energy from solar panels, emphasising the school's commitment to reducing our environmental impact. In addition, the McKie Resource Centre (Library) has been redeveloped to provide expanded space and resources conducive to learning, study and research.

At the official opening, we were honoured to be joined by former Principal Di Fleming AM who spoke brilliantly about Kilvington’s leadership in technology and science in the 90s. It was a moment of pride as she highlighted that we were the first school in Australia to provide students with access to the Internet.

David Southwick, Member for Caulfield, Deputy Leader of the Victorian Liberal Party and Deputy Leader of the Victorian Opposition, kindly assisted in the official cutting of the ribbon, ably supported by School Co-Vice Captain Jack Campbell-Manly.

Announced at the official opening were The Jon Charlton Technology Centre (former Principal) and The Professor Jayashri Kulkarni AM Science Centre (former Chair of the Board). Both played instrumental roles in turning the vision of a STEAM Centre into a reality.

Year 8 student Cameron Leighton was credited with creating the name 'The HIVE' – standing for Harmony, Innovation, Vision, and Excellence. Cameron expressed, ‘This new building promises to create a fiery passion for STEM in future generations of scientists and problem-solvers.’

A special shout out to our School Co-Captains: Ruby Wilson was brilliant as emcee for the official event (as well as the Donor Appreciation Event) and Jude Teo gave a special insight into what The HIVE means for our students.

Following the official opening, we held parent tours and a special Donor Appreciation event. We thanked all our generous donors for supporting the School’s vision for The HIVE with a Donor Honour Board. In particular, we thanked The Hugh and Selina Williams Foundation for their generous contribution to The Coding Lounge.

Lunar New Year and the International Student Council

Stephanie Ye and Shirley Jin, Year 11

The International Student Council at Kilvington is a student body that aims to spread awareness, understanding and inclusion of all cultures within our school community.

Earlier this year, the current council members gave an engaging and informative presentation about Lunar New Year at our whole school assembly. During the assembly, international students shared images and interesting facts to help explore the traditions surrounding this culturally significant event.

Students in attendance learnt that Lunar New Year, also known as the Spring Festival, is the biggest holiday in Asian culture. The presentation explained the significance of wearing red and the reason for the annual changing dates.

By valuing each other’s cultures and traditions, we promote a sense of shared humanity and foster greater empathy and connection.

Year 11 Camp Jungai

Shirley Jin, Year 11

In April, the Year 11 students went to Camp Jungai in Rubicon, Victoria.

During the camp, I enjoyed a range of activities, such as hiking, group activities and culture sessions. Setting up the tent and watching the campfire were especially memorable. Attending camp not only taught me new things, but also helped me to get to know my friends event better.

As an international student, I felt extremely welcomed by my friends, camp staff and teachers. The fresh air and the sounds of nature were a great change from school life.

I left camp with a sense of accomplishment, a sense of belonging and memories I will cherish forever. This experience not only strengthened my connection to the school community but also made me feel more at home in this new country.

Overall, the school camp was a transformative experience. It helped me build confidence, gain a deeper appreciation for different cultures, and develop new friendships.
