The Power of Languages
Jon Williams, Deputy Head of Senior School
Taken from a speech delivered at a Year 7 assembly highlighting languages and culture.
It struck me as slightly ironic that Madame Dickens asked me to speak to you today. I take little comfort in being in the statistical majority on this occasion—I am in the 57% of the world’s population that does not speak a second language.
Incredibly, there are over 7000 languages spoken around the world. Each one is like a key that unlocks a different culture, a different way of thinking, and a unique way of expressing ideas. When we learn a new language, we're not just memorising words; we're opening ourselves up to a whole new world of understanding.
During 2017 and 2018, I lived in India for 18 months and also spent time in Vietnam. India's diverse culture, incredible food, stunning colour and beautiful people made it a truly memorable experience.
I met and travelled with people from all over the world, many of whom spoke several languages. My Indian friends taught me many words, which helped me to stumble my way from the south to the north of the vast and beautiful country. And in Vietnam, Xin Chao (hello) and Cam On (Thank you) became second nature.
The experience of living in these two nations taught me that language is more than just words; it's a gateway to understanding and connecting with others. Even a few words or phrases can make a world of difference in how we communicate and relate to each other.
It was during my time living abroad that I wished I could return to my high school Japanese classes and fully embrace the opportunity to learn the language.
I hope that many years from now, when you’re older like me, you will look back at this time and be glad you made the most of your opportunity to learn another language. Of course, there are things that transcend language: a friendly smile; a helping hand; a willingness to do what's good and right; kindness and love.
As you continue your journey of learning French and Japanese, my hope is that you will be guided by that spirit. I hope you remain curious, open, and choose love in a world that desperately needs it. If so, you will find a world of wonder awaits you.
So today, as we celebrate the diversity of languages and cultures around the world, let's remember that language is not just about fluency; it's about the willingness to learn, to step out of our comfort zones, and to embrace new cultures and perspectives.
Thank you, and let's continue to celebrate the power and beauty of languages, no matter how big or small our vocabulary may be.
