A Spotlight on Learning in the SLC on Heights Campus
Term 2 has been packed with a variety of learning opportunities, special events and celebrations for our Senior Learning Centre students both in and outside school. The SLC teachers are very proud of how the students have built on their knowledge and understanding across all areas of the curriculum. Students have demonstrated our school values of Respect, Resilience, Collaboration and Excellence during activities such as SLC Log Cabin Camp, ‘Top Up’ Swimming Program, Reconciliation Week and Refugee Week.
In Reading, students have been developing their ability to summarise what they have read. They identified important information or ideas and described them using key words and their own words in their summaries. They used different comprehension strategies to help them understand texts better and shared their deeper thinking about the characters and events in their responses. In Writing, students are showing themselves as budding authors as they plan, draft, revise and edit their narratives. They are including sizzling starts, writing to show not tell and using language that is engaging for their readers.
In Mathematics, the SLC students have delved into Additive Thinking this term. They have been learning to solve addition and subtraction problems, working with larger numbers, numbers with decimal fractions, fractions and mixed numbers. They rounded numbers to estimate and check the accuracy of their calculations.
In Projects, students have been working on how to communicate information and ideas from their investigations and findings about natural disasters and extreme weather conditions, and the impact they have on people and the environment. They collaborated in their groups to present and share their knowledge to the MLC students using Google Slides, videos and 3D models. It was definitely a showcase of the students’ learning, oral presentation skills and creativity.
This term, our SLC students have been involved in the SSV Springvale District Interschool Sports where they competed in AFL, soccer, sofcrosse and netball against different schools in the district. Our soccer team and netball teams made it to the finals together with our Springvale Campus’ teams. They showed great sportsmanship during the games with our soccer team winning the premiership and our netball girls team winning runners-up.
The SLC teachers are looking forward to the rest of the year with our students and we value every day that we learn and grow together. Have a safe and wonderful school holidays and we will see you all in Term 3!
