Term 4 Middle and Senior School (Years 7-12) Enrichment

As well as sport, music and service, the School offers a diverse range of co-curricular activities designed to provide extension and enrichment opportunities for students, particularly in the key learning areas and which typically involve team competition, team challenge or a significant individual or group performance.

Outdoor Education & Adventure

Mountain Bike Club

Mountain Bike Club provides students with the opportunity to develop riding fitness, improve confidence and bike handling skills, and connect with other riders in the Friends' School community. Students will explore Hobart's local trail network, including Knocklofty, the foothills of kunanyi / Mt Wellington and the Domain.

Rides are suitable for students with some previous mountain biking experience on rough and uneven terrain. Students with little or no experience who are interested in participating are encouraged to contact Sam Jarvis.

The club runs during Term 4 on Thursday afternoons. Students meet at the Weet-Bix at 3:45pm with all required equipment and return to school by 6:00pm. Room E201 is available for students to store bags and equipment while riding.

Games, Strategy & Problem Solving

Chess

There are three ways students can become involved in Chess throughout the year. Whether you are an experienced player or completely new to the game, everyone is welcome to participate.

After School Chess Club is held most Wednesdays during term time and is run by professional coaches. Students can improve their skills, compete against other Friends' students and enjoy regular social games.

Interschool Chess Competition is held once each term at schools around the Hobart region, culminating in a State Final in Term 4. Sign-up information will be distributed via Paperly closer to each event.

House Chess is a House-based competition held during recess over several weeks. Students compete for House points and the annual House Chess Cup.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics)

Maker's Club

Maker's Club caters for students who may not be studying Design and Technology but would like to utilise the woodworking and metalworking facilities to create a project of their own choosing. Students receive guidance and support while developing practical skills through individually negotiated projects.

The club runs on Tuesday afternoons from 3:35pm – 5:15pm throughout Terms 1–4.

Arts & Creative Activities

Film Club

Film Club brings together students with a passion for cinema to watch and discuss films from a wide range of genres, cultures, directors and time periods. Following each screening, students are invited to discuss themes, filmmaking techniques and ideas explored in the film.

Students who are unable to attend in person can also participate through Film Club Online.

Attendance contributes towards CAS Creativity hours, and students who choose to write reviews for publication on the Keepin' It Reel website or in Focus can also earn CAS Creativity (Years 11–12) or Service hours (Years 9–10).

The club meets weekly during Term 4. Screenings begin at 4:00pm, with doors opening at 3:45pm.

Health & Wellbeing

Community Yoga

An inspiring way to start your day with energising movement, focused breathing and a moment for relaxation and stillness. All members of the School community are welcome to attend and no previous yoga experience is necessary.

Community Yoga is held in Hodgkin Hall each week from 7:40am – 8:15am. Julia will meet participants outside the Carr Street entrance.

Available to students in Years 7–12

Equipment is supplied and yoga is suitable for all experience levels.

Friends Run Club

Friends Run Club is for students who enjoy running and would like to challenge themselves by participating in some of Hobart's most popular community running events. Whether you're aiming to complete your first fun run or set a new personal best, the club provides a supportive environment to train alongside other students with similar goals.

Throughout the year, students will have opportunities to participate in local events such as the Point to Pub, City to Casino, Run the Bridge, Hobart Marathon Festival and the Bruny Island Ultra Marathon.

 

In 2026, The Friends' School will be entering a team in the Point to Pub on Sunday 15 November, with even more exciting running opportunities and events planned for 2027.

Arts & Creative Activities

Art Club

Art Club is a creative space where students can develop their skills in drawing, painting, photography, sculpture and other visual arts. Students are encouraged to experiment with new techniques while working alongside others who share an interest in art.

All materials are provided—just bring your imagination.

Art Club runs during Term 4 on Friday mornings from 7:30am – 8:25am.

Games, Strategy & Problem Solving

D & D (Dungeons and Dragons) Club

D&D is an imagination-based role-playing game where students work together to complete adventures guided by a Dungeon Master (DM). No previous experience is required—just a willingness to participate, be creative and have fun.

The club is run by students for students and generally meets on the first Tuesday of each month after school until approximately 7:00pm.
