Term 1 Middle and Senior School (Years 7-12) Sport

The following sports are on offer for Term 1. Students are asked to sign up by Thursday 6 Feb so that further information can be sent out to parents via Operoo. We ask that students and parents either Accept or Decline the commitment form sent on Operoo by the due date of 12 February so that teams can be entered.

SSATIS Athletics Squad 2025

Sign ups are available on Clipboard for selection in SSATIS and SATIS athletics teams. Should there be events where there are several nominations, trials will be held later in February. Final selection for positions will be held later in February BEFORE the 7-12 House Athletics carnival.

Please note: whilst the School will endeavour to provide opportunities for students to participate in the sport(s) of their choice, this is dependent on there being sufficient numbers and parent supervisors to make up viable teams.

Basketball Boys Years 7/8

Matches: Thursdays at 4:00pm, 4:15pm or 5:00pm

Season: 20 February to 3 April

Venue(s): Home games are played at the Revell Sports Centre with away games at other SSATIS schools in the greater Hobart area

Orienteering Years 7-12

Season: The Term 1 Southern Tasmanian Autumn Twilight series runs from Wednesday, 26 February until 2 April

Venue(s):  Events are held every Wednesday afternoon at the venues indicated below.

Uniform: Sports uniform. Students who do not wear the correct Friends’ Sports uniform will not be allowed to participate.

Skill level required: Beginner - Experienced

Transport: Friends’ students leave school at approximately 3.35pm and choose their own start time up until 5.30pm. Students can leave the event as soon as they have finished and notified the weekly manager; at the very latest, they need to be collected by 6pm

Rowing Years 7-12

Our Rowing program is open to students from Years 6 (including new students enrolling at Friends’ in Year 7) to Year 12 and seeks to teach introductory skills to new rowers, while extending the abilities of experienced rowers.

 

Being part of the rowing community gives students a wonderful sense of connection and community. Rowing is great exercise and a fantastic team sport. Aside from rowing, the social side of the sport sees connections and friendships fun, enjoyment, teamwork, building a sense of community being formed that cross over age groupings and can last for many years.

Sailing 7-12

Matches: Wednesday after school actual event

Season: The Term 1 season runs from Wednesday 12  February to 26 March

Venue(s):  All after-school events in Term 1 are sailed from Sandy Bay Sailing Club, Long Point Road, Sandy Bay

Uniform: The equipment required for this activity is normal sailing attire – PFD, wetsuit or warm clothing, sun protection (this includes sunscreen and hat) and sailing footwear (either wetsuit booties or sports shoes that can get wet). Barefoot sailing is not permitted and students without the correct gear cannot participate.

Skill level required: Beginner - Experienced. Students new to sailing or with limited experience will sail with more experienced sailors. 

Transport: Parents are responsible for transporting their own child

Uniform: School polo top, navy track pants/shorts, white sports socks, suitable sports shoes. The School will supply equipment required for this activity, however students are encouraged to bring their own equipment if available. Students who do not wear the correct Friends’ sports uniform will not be allowed on the field. This will be enforced by the School.

Tennis Boys (1st and 2nd grade)

Matches: 1st grade Tuesdays and 2nd grade Wednesdays

Season: 19 February to 2 April 

Venue(s): Home games will be played either at the Commercial Road courts or Domain Tennis Centre, with away games at various SSATIS school courts in the greater Hobart area. 

Uniform: The Friends’ School sports uniform – polo topnavy shortswhite sports socks, suitable sports shoes, sun hat. Students will need their own racquet. Students who do not wear the correct Friends’ sports uniform will not be allowed on the court. This will be enforced by the School and SSATIS.

Skill level required: Intermediate - Experienced 

Usually only students from Years 10-12 will be invited to attend selection trials for 1st teams.  For Tennis, younger aged students may try out if they have demonstrated a high level playing ability. Consideration will be given to the safety and social development of students, with priority given to older students where skill levels are comparable.
