DEPUTY PRINCIPAL'S REPORT
MS CATHERINE HOWISON - DEPUTY PRINCIPAL
Our formal Assembly on Thursday, 20th of June was a wonderful celebration of student achievement, effort, compassion and involvement. In many ways, it feels like a very long term and to be reminded of all the fantastic things that happen in our school was very uplifting. We were extremely grateful to have Kellie Carlo from the Swan Hill Regional Library speak to our students about the Young Mentor Program. This initiative has been running for two terms and two of our Year 9 classes have been involved. Kellie spoke very highly of our students and congratulated them on their participation. She passed on the gratitude felt by the seniors who had attended the sessions with our students and they should be very proud of themselves for making such a significant contribution to our community.
Evie Jennings also attended to speak about the upcoming opportunity of the Yamagata Student Exchange program. Evie herself stood on the stage ten years ago as a student and as a School Captain so it was lovely to have her back in our community.
Each of the Student Leadership Committees reported on their activities, not only the projects they have completed but also the initiatives they will be running in Term 3.
Emily Hall, on behalf of the Student Forum, spoke about the Student-Friendly Child Safety Policy that has been reviewed and updated this year. Originally developed in 2023, this is a version of an important school policy written and produced in such a way as to be more accessible to students. As a DOBCEL school, St Mary MacKillop College has a responsibility to make sure that all staff are familiar with and act within the Child Safe Standards. We have a policy so that we can protect the rights of young people and help adults become more aware of the need to show great care and respect to younger members of our community. The Student-Friendly Child Safety Policy outlines the things the school does to make sure that staff know their responsibilities and it tells students what to do if they feel that Child Safety Standards are not being followed.
We all have a responsibility to treat each other with respect and dignity and the Student Forum has done some good work in putting this version of the policy that upholds that together. In particular, I am grateful for the additional work that Emily herself did in refining and producing the document. This document will be available to students in Pastoral Care, the Front Office and via a Student Link on Simon.
As we draw to the conclusion of the term we remember and celebrate all the great things that happen each day at our wonderful school. In particular, we recognise students who have been awarded Commendations in a variety of areas. I would also like to acknowledge and thank our staff, who are committed to providing opportunities for all our students to learn and flourish, to strive and to make a contribution to our community in diverse and meaningful ways.
