Preps in art

Prep students have been busy learning about the art element of line in art classes. We looked around us and discovered lines were everywhere -  the sides of the whiteboard, the edge of the carpet, and even across the ceiling. Some lines went up and down - vertical, some were straight across - horizontal, and some lines we could see looked like they were leaning - diagonal. We took our pencils for a walk in our visual diaries to see what other sorts of lines we could make. We had fun making wavy lines, thick lines, thin lines, zigzag lines, curly lines, squiggly lines, dotted lines, and dashed lines. We saw what other things we could draw with lines, and had fun again taking our pencil for a walk to make spirals, hearts, clouds, circles, squares and triangles. Students discovered that a triangle is still a triangle even if it tips over or is upside down!

We used our knowledge of lines to draw a robot, and then paint it. In another lesson, we ordered different sized lines thick (a.k.a rectangle paper strips) from smallest to largest. Then we glued each line together to make it into a circle. Students glued these circles inside each other to make a snail shell. They also had to draw a line within another thick rectangle paper strip to make a long body and a wider head for their snail. Students were creative and added thin paper antennae to the heads of their snail. Lots of fine motor skills were used in this activity - drawing, cutting, and glueing their paper circles inside their other paper circles. Well done, preps!
