Measurement - Length
In Term 2, FKJ students have been exploring the mathematical area of measurement and investigating the concept of length.
To begin, students were introduced to the language of measurement. Learning specific measurement terminology supports the learning of the students. Measurement has mathematical language that students must understand in order to make meaning and develop their knowledge. Terms such as: short, tall, small, tiny, big, huge, massive, gigantic, long, height and length were shared with the students.
Students engaged in a variety of hands-on activities that allowed them to explore the concept of length. They enjoyed the active nature of these activities, making predictions, experimenting, problem-solving, and having some wonderful conversations about their findings.
Read on to learn about some of these activities!
Who is taller? Who is shorter?
Students compared two objects to determine which was taller or shorter. To begin, everyone was given an icy-pole stick. They walked around the classroom, searching for objects that were taller than the stick. Students then shared their findings with their classmates and created a whole class poster. Next the students walked around the classroom searching for objects that were shorter than the icy-pole stick. At the conclusion they created a second poster of items that were shorter than the icy-pole stick. At the same time, Miss Jones called one student at a time down to the floor. On the floor she measured each student with paper stripping and created an FKJ Height Graph. Students then had to predict how tall they would grow by the end of the year. They placed a sticker at the top of their paper strip, to show how tall they would be by the end of Term 4. At the end of the year, all students will be measured a second time, to find out how tall they have grown. I wonder how tall the students will grow and whose predictions come true!
Outside - I am taller than… I am shorter than..
Students walked outside and looked for objects that they were taller than and shorter than. Miss Jones took photos of these objects and created a classroom poster.
We are taller than…
We are shorter than…
Measuring our bodies
FKJ students wondered how tall they were by measuring the length of their body with a hand template. Students made a hand template by tracing around their hand onto a piece of paper and cutting out around the tracing line. They then went outside and traced around their bodies using chalk. Students measured how many times their hand template fitted into their body outline. They compared their measurements with their classmate’s measurements.
Echi Echidna Term 2
Week 4 Echi Adventures - Ellery
In Week 4 Ellery took Echi home and had so many exciting adventures together! On Sunday, Ellery and Echi celebrated Mother's Day with Ellery's Mum. Echi helped Ellery to write out a list of ways that she loves her Mum. What a lovely idea! Next Ellery and Echi went out for lunch and ate a scrumptious cake! Yummy! Ellery loves to read books and she and Echi had a lovely time reading a book called, 'Cat Kid'! Lastly Ellery showed Echi how to play a game called, Four in a Row. I wonder who won the game? Well done Ellery for sharing these lovely adventures with Echi! We all enjoyed listening to you share the fun times that you had with our furry friend. Great job!
Week 5 Echi Adventures - Heather
In the fifth week of Term 2, Heather took Echi home. Heather and Echi had so much fun together! Firstly they travelled home from school on Heather's scooter. Heather made sure that Echi was safely holding on to her while she scooted home. You are so careful Heather! Next she gave Echi a pampering session by combing his spikes and reading a lovely story to him. Echi then snuggled with Heather and her other toy friends. Afterwards coloured pencils and textas came out and Heather showed Echi how to colour inside the lines of an owl picture. Heather also showed Echi how to make a cubby house, wear a Melbourne footy beanie and read a car manual! Wow! Thank you Heather for sharing so many wonderful adventures with Echi! We loved hearing about all the fun things you did with him! Super effort!
Thank you to Ellery and Heather's parents for their support in organising these adventures! We look forward to hearing more adventures soon!
