Year 9 Geography camp

As students arrived on the first day, they had begun to work on their tents. After having a quick practice of making tents at school, they swiftly built up their tents with our luggage inside.  Students also participated in helping each other when others were in a bit of trouble setting things up. They also had to bring in their own food and cook for themselves. Students all made sure they had finished cooking and cleaning before the set time for their late night activities. Before going to sleep students had 2 hours to do whatever they wanted like playing board games, making some smores and hot chocolate etc. In the end students showed resilience and strength when it came to solving problems by themselves.

Whilst on camp we went to places like Fort Nepean, Bushrangers Bay and Sorrento front and back beach, to compare and analyse the geography and landscapes along the Peninsula. We had a wonderful experience exploring the diverse landscapes of the Mornington Peninsula, whether it was exploring  the bush at Bushrangers Bay with its rugged coastline and wild beauty or investigating Sorrento front beach and admiring the difference between both sides of the Peninsula. As we journeyed through the Peninsula, the interplay of nature and human history became more evident. The Point Nepean National Park was a revelation, showcasing how flora and fauna have reclaimed areas once dedicated to military operations. Our exploration took us to the serene Sorrento back beach, where the rhythmic dance of the tides against the limestone cliffs. The rock pools, teeming with marine life, were natural aquariums, revealing the complexity of ocean ecosystems.

Attending geography camp was one of the most exciting experiences of the year for us. It was an entirely new experience, and we managed to do so many things in the short span of 3 days. We sat through rainy nights in our tents, and cooked our dinners outdoors, in the open. The meals we managed to make weren’t altogether too bad, but they weren’t the greatest things ever. We woke and walked along the beaches, watching the sun at dawn and the stars at night. Altogether, it was an amazing experience and one we will never forget.
