Thornbury Sport
On the 3rd of May, Thornbury High School held the 2024 Athletics Carnival, which was at Coburg Athletics Track for the first time. As all the students started to arrive the excitement was beaming, as everyone showed their support by dressing up in extravagant costumes for their respective houses.
As always the day’s schedule was jam-packed with events with a diverse range of field and track events including shot put, long jump, sprints and many others. Throughout the day, many students swarmed the Year 12 dance pit, creating a lively energy among students.
Where Mr Ding showed off his iconic dance moves, impressing all the students. The atmosphere was electric as the students cheered for year 12s as they raced the 200m and 100m sprint.
Throughout the day, students showed outstanding efforts in every event, giving their respective houses a chance at winning the house cup. A special mention goes out to Lila Dunn in Year 12, Siena Dowsing in Year 10 along with James Mandarano in Year 11 and Christian Kodagoda in Year 9, which all tallied the most house points for their houses.
Towards the end of the day, traditions were continued and new traditions were made. As always the Tug of War event took place. With ease Saunders knocked out Onus, making their lead known to the other houses. Blair quickly knocked out Nicholls. We saw Saunders and Blair battle it out, yet Blair’s winning streak was short lived.
As the points tallied up, there was one race left, Teachers Vs Students relay. Each house selected their best sprinters, while the teachers selected their best sprinters. Tension was at an all time high, it was each house's last opportunity to win the cup while respectively defeating these teachers. From the moment the race started it was all over, Saunders lead was no match for these teachers nor the other houses.
The final scores were:
1st Saunders 651 points
2nd Nicholls 630 points
3rd Blair 619 points
4th Onus 592 points
Congratulations to Saunders and Mr Nasser (Saunders’ biggest supporter) for finally winning the house cup. It has been a long-awaited win.
Well done to all the students who dressed up and participated in the events. I would also like to thank all the teachers, staff and house captains who helped run the events, ensuring the day was an incredible success!!
