Incursion Police and Fire brigade Visit
It has been a very busy couple of weeks in Foundation and not only did we go on our wonderful community walk we also have had some exciting visitors!
From the Preston Police Station, we had two police officers called Loretta and Andy come and talk to us. They told us about their jobs, the tools they use and showed us their ‘sneaky’ police car.
Did you know some police cars don’t have any signs on them!
They reminded us to always wear a seatbelt when we are in a car, and a helmet when we are riding a bike or scooter.
We learnt how to use a smart phone in an emergency if we don’t know the code for the phone. We need to swipe up and press the word that starts with an ‘E’ for emergency. Some numbers will appear on the screen and then we call 000 and ask for the firefighters, the ambulance, or the police.
They asked us to learn our address so that if we ever have to call 000 the emergency services will know where we are.
Our other visitors were community helpers from the Northcote Fire Brigade! They showed us some scenarios of safe and unsafe fire situations in the home. We learnt about what sorts of things they need to do their job, including seeing some awesome tools from their truck. The best part was when we got to have a look in the truck and have a go using the hose!
The firemen had some important things to teach us as well.
We learnt that in a fire the smoke goes up and it is not a good idea to stand up in the smoke, because we will not be able to breathe. We need to get down low so we can see and breathe cleaner air. Remember ‘Crawl down low and GO, GO, GO’.
To protect our homes from a fire at home, smoke detectors are very important and every house should have one that is checked every year.
The firefighters told us if there is a fire, we must leave the house quickly. We need a safe place to meet outside, where the firefighters can see us and away from danger. The Prep’s homework was to talk with their families about having a safe meeting place in the case of a fire.
It has been a highly successful unit of inquiry with our Foundation students increasing their understanding of different people and places in our community.
