Learning About Learning:

Last year I visited outstanding schools in New York and New Orleans.
From this experience, we have introduced some new programmes to Western Heights.
One of these is introducing Specialist Teaching Modules in Kakapo Syndicate - year 5 and 6.
This year, we have eight teachers in this team, so they provide eight learning modules addressing the non-literacy and numeracy curriculum areas.
These modules are delivered three afternoons per week - one class for the whole week for each module teacher.
After eight weeks, all children have experienced eight modules.
A reflection will then be conducted, which will influence decisions made regarding the delivery of the next set of eight modules.
Modules for the First Eight Weeks:
- Financial Literacy
- Specialised Physical Education skills
- Ocean Explorers Environmental Science
- Science - STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts Mathematics) with the specific focus on Potential Energy
- Coding using Binary
- German
- French
- Visual Language utilising multi-media Tools and applications
I am most impressed with the way our Kakapo Team members, under the leadership and guidance of Team Leader Alannah Lupe-Houben, have got behind this and are making it a great success.
