Learning in Action

Word Work:

Throughout the term, we will be exploring the Latin morphology of 'pulse', 'vise', 'aud' and 'move'. Students will learn about the meaning of the morphemes, decode and spell words that include these morphemes and then incorporate them into sentences to demonstrate understanding of the language in context.

Literature:

We began the term by exploring two influential texts: Common Wealth and The ANZAC Day Parade. These texts helped us build a deeper understanding of World War I, with a particular focus on the ANZACs and the Gallipoli landing. Students investigated key historical questions: What happened? When and where did it occur? Who was involved? Why was Australia part of it? These discussions supported reading comprehension while also developing historical thinking.

After Camp, we are excited to begin our novel study on Us Mob Walawurru—a powerful and thought-provoking story that provides insight into Indigenous Australian perspectives. Through this text, students will explore themes of culture, identity, and community while developing empathy and understanding of First Nations voices and experiences.

Mathematics:

In Maths, our focus this week has been on Data Interpretation and Representation. Students learned to distinguish between categorical and numerical data, create and interpret tables and graphs, and identify potentially misleading data displays. As the term progresses, students will explore secondary data sources and evaluate how trustworthy and accurate this data is. They'll also be given the opportunity to gather their own data to analyse and compare.

Preview:

Students will learn how numbers can be partitioned in different ways to support multiplication. Students will develop strategies for multiplying by 10, 100, and 1000, building strong foundational number sense and confidence in mental maths.

Canberra Camp:

Camp is just around the corner, and excitement is definitely building!

During our time in Canberra, students will visit key national institutions such as Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, Questacon, the National Museum, and more. These visits will support our studies in civics, citizenship and history, providing students with a deeper understanding of how our government works, our national identity, and the contributions of those who have shaped Australia.

This camp also helps to foster independence, strengthen friendships, and build teamwork and resilience in a new and exciting environment.

Families should have received an email with all the final details, including arrival and departure times, itinerary highlights, and important reminders. If you haven’t had a chance to look it over yet, please do so, and feel free to reach out if you have any questions.

We’re so excited for the adventures ahead and can’t wait to share this special experience with our students!
