Learning in Action

Literacy

The start of Term 2 has seen students commence a new literature unit. The new text titled 'Waves' has been introduced. This picture story book is targeted at older children and it features stories of migration to Australia by boat across a long history. Students have used the story during grammar and vocabulary lessons, including the use of direct speech in text. During Word Work, students have commenced learning about words that utilise Greek numbers, such a 'monotone' (one tone) and divert (second path).

Preview for Learning: The literature units will be broken down into smaller periods of study this term. Students will once against revisit literary devices through narratives, honing in on themes and ideas that connect to migration and Australian history.

Maths

Throughout Week 1, students have primarily focused their learning on data and graphing. The learning has not only discussed forms of data and ways it is collected, but also introduced the concepts of categorical and numerical data. We have explored various types of graphs, including the exploration of dots plots, tables, pie charts and line graphs. Beyond our learning about data, students have continued to evolve their skills via daily reviews and Maths Masters.

Preview for Learning: Learning about data will tranfer into a Data Investigation that the students will complete over the coming weeks. In addition, numeracy learning will focus on multiplication, exploring various strategies such as partitioning, rounding and estimation, and the vertical algoithm.

ANZAC Day

On Thursday after recess, the school participated in an ANZAC Day service led by the School Captains. Thank you to the Grade 5 representatives who shared a poppy and leaf on behalf of each class.

We were very fortunate to have a special guest speaker on Tuesday afternoon in Grade 5. Uncle Daryl Bristowe, Mrs Halstead's uncle, is a Vietnam War veteran who came to chat about various wars and some of his experiences.

Daryl had been to the Vietnam War and came to tell us all the memories he remembered and what war was like. He even brought his great grandad's medals along, as well as his father's and his medals, too. He showed us the uniform of an American soldier and also an Australian soldier. Thank you for visiting and chatting with us, Darryl.

Sport

How great was it to experience House Athletics at the end of last term. Thank you to all of the happy participants, helpers and supporters that contributed to a successful event.

This week, Mr. Thomas spent many recess and lunch breaks conducting trials and training for various athletic and sporting events. Term 2 will see Winter Round Robin days come around quite quickly, so keep an eye out for details to be shared on Compass.
