Learning in Action - a preview of the term

Literacy:

Term 2 Word Work begins with a focus on the latin base word ‘form’  meaning form, structure, shape or appearance.

This week we have begun reading the text for our first literature unit for Term 2, The Arrival. This book uses pictures to take us on a journey of an unknown man who travels to a foreign country. There is no written text, so students have enjoyed identifying themes within the pictures to understand what the author is trying to tell us. So far, the unnamed man has felt feelings of fear, nervousness and loneliness, as he has left his wife and daughter behind to embark on this journey to a strange and unfamiliar land.

We will continue to unpack and discuss the themes, experiences and feelings of the unnamed man and his family in The Arrival.

Maths:

Just a quick note to let you know that many of the upcoming strategies and concepts will begin to require students to think in more multiplicative ways. While Term 3 will place a strong emphasis on multiplication, these skills will also connect with other areas of maths we see in term 2.

From our daily reviews, we’ve noticed that many students are finding multiplication challenging. Extra practice at home—particularly with times tables—would be incredibly helpful and will support their learning across the rest of the year.

We truly appreciate your continued support!

Throughout Term 2, Grade 4 students will place a strong emphasis on addition and subtraction, exploring how these operations are interconnected. They'll learn a variety of strategies to solve equations, including vertical algorithms, using friendly numbers, and applying the jump strategy.

In our applied math units, we've begun focusing on data. Students are exploring different types of graphs, methods for collecting data, and how to represent that data visually. As part of this, they’ll conduct an investigation into global seasons, identifying which countries are ideal to visit at various times of the year. They will collect and graph the data from their findings.

Following this, we will begin our unit on time. In this investigation, students will practise reading clocks to the nearest five minutes and work on calculating elapsed time.

Wellbeing:

This fortnight we explore that sometimes in friendships a ‘Friendship Fire’ can occur (a misunderstanding or disagreement). Students have been learning ways to problem solve strategies or responses that will not fuel the flames of the fire. Next week, we will introduce the topic of ‘Mean on Purpose’ and how this can cause a friendship fire to ignite.
