Learning in Action

Literacy

This term, Grade 3 students will work through two picture story book literature units. We will begin with Off We Go Around Australia - a book that combines four stories which follow a family on their adventures around Australia. Students will also plan and write an explanation text during this unit. During Term 2, students will continue their daily Word Work sessions, along with regular fluency partner reading, handwriting and reading goal routines and practices.

Over the next fortnight, students will be focusing on understanding the Silent Final E (SFE) + vowel suffix rule in Word Work (e.g. when adding a vowel suffix such as ‘ing’ to a base word such as ‘ride’, we drop the ‘e’, then add the ‘ing’ suffix = riding). During our literature unit, students will deepen their comprehension by closely analysing illustrations and discussing how they enhance both engagement and meaning for the reader. Students will be focusing on learning the structure of an explanation text and planning and writing an introduction. Our grammar lessons will focus on sentence expansion and the use of conjunctions within sentences.

Maths

In Term 2, students will build their understanding of addition and subtraction and be exposed to a variety of strategies to support them in solving addition and subtraction equations. Students will also engage in Maths Review 4 times a week, allowing them to revise and practise previously learnt knowledge and skills. They will continue frequent Maths Masters practise and explore the concepts of Location, Area, Mass and Capacity. This week students have been explicitly taught about location.

Students will consolidate what they have learnt about location by creating their own legend and map of a school playground. Beginning with addition during our Number lessons, students will practise manipulating problems by adding numbers in any order, and breaking numbers up to help them solve addition problems.

Wellbeing

This term during our Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships (RRRR) lessons, students will focus on developing their emotional literacy and personal strengths. Through Friendology, we will continue to explore friendships and students will use what they have learned to guide their decision making and support them in maintaining healthy friendships.

Next week, students will learn more about the importance of honesty within a friendship and how being kind-on-purpose takes priority.
