YEAR 10-12 NEWS

Year 10
Congratulations Marli Cammaroto from 10G and Caleb Stolk from 10E have been selected to be involved in the Geelong Spring Back Program.
Spring Back Geelong is a resilience-based program that will take young people out of the school setting for two days a week (each Thursday & Friday) for a term where they will undertake challenges and activities around Geelong such as surfing, sailing, visiting the police station and different businesses, and involved with the Trade Taster program.
As well as being out in the community, the young people will also receive training and hear from guest speakers at the GYE Hub, including talks from mental health professionals and G-force. The activities are designed for a purpose; they will be challenging - either physically or mentally - but with the purpose of building resilience and an outcome of self-achievement. The end of the program will finish with a camp, where the young people will be tested on the skills they have learnt over the course of the program, challenging themselves and their teamwork.
Senior Years Art Enrichment Tour

Year 12 Bulletin – 2/5/24
Another great start to the term for our year 12’s, with them all hitting the ground running, ready for another busy term.
Over the next couple of months, we have quite a few big and important events happening. The most important one to spring to mind in the GAT on Tuesday 17th of June. For those new to VCE – the GAT or General Achievement Test is a two-part examination for ALL year 12 students and any year 11 student doing a unit 3/4 subject. To put it simply, it is a literacy and numeracy test that all students sit to benchmark them against standard levels (a bit like NAPLAN) and a general subject skills style test which is an important tool to help the VCAA calculate a derived score for any issues around exam times.
This term, we will also have mid-year examinations for unit 3 for all students as well to help prepare the students for the end of year examinations.
Finally, a quick reminder that attendance is important for VCE, with a 90% attendance expectation for all students. Any SAC’s missed will require a medical certificate, otherwise a student will not be able to sit the assessment for a score. This will impact the study score for that subject as an ungraded will be entered as a result. From this term, redemptions SAC’s will be supervised on Thursday after school.

Year 12 - Grand Prix Trip
What a thrilling day it was for our students as they attended the 2025 Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix at Albert Park in Melbourne! The atmosphere was electric, the engines were roaring, and the excitement was off the charts as students got a front-row seat to one of the biggest sporting events in the world.
Throughout the day, students watched high-speed practice laps and support races, visited the STEM Zone (where they explored racing technology, sustainability in motorsport, and the future of electric vehicles), engaged with interactive displays and simulators, took part in discussions around careers in motorsport, including roles in mechanics, hospitality, communications, and data analysis.
Many students said the highlight was hearing the deafening roar of the F2 engines up close and feeling the energy of thousands of fans united by a love of racing.
Mother’s Day Stall – Preparation
Year 12 VCE-VM PDS students have been working hard creating items for our annual Mother’s Day Stall. On Friday May 9th all students will have the opportunity to purchase gifts for their mum sessions 1- 4. All sales will be donated to a variety of organisations. Items will include:
Candles
Keyrings
Self-care packages
Mugs
Coasters
Plants
Items will be priced between $3 and $15.
Year 12 - Eco Data
On Wednesday 23rd and Thursday 24th, two VM year 12 classes had a fantastic day out, where they attended the Geelong Tech School for a Numeracy Outcome for Eco Data. They designed and transferred data from weather stations around Geelong to create visualizations such as line graphs, reveal graphs, picture graphs and slides.
The students got assistance from tech staff about learning how the apps and features work and what they will be utilizing this term for an Assessment task.
Year 12 - Design to Thrive
Year 12 VCE-VM students took part in an engaging agricultural program run by Geelong Tech School, where they gained valuable insights into the industry through an immersive experience. During their visit, students toured the facility, volunteered on the farm, and learned about the business operations firsthand.
They had the opportunity to hear from farmer Lachie, who shared key challenges faced by Common Ground. Using the Design Thinking process, students worked collaboratively to brainstorm innovative solutions and develop prototypes to address these issues. Their creative projects ranged from portable sheds and mechanical blind motors to redesigned chicken coops and plant signage prototypes, which they proudly presented back to the company.
Year 12 - Herne Hill Athletics Day
Last term, the Year 12 VCE-VM students spent the day assisting with Herne Hill Primary School’s Athletics Carnival. Students were separated into groups, assisting the Herne Hill teaching staff to run each field and track event. Students showed their leadership qualities by encouraging the primary students to try their best, showing initiative, communicating in their teams, and solving problems when they arose. Congratulations to all students involved.
Work-Related Skills – Student Advocacy
As part of the Year 12 VM/VPC Work Related Skills program, students have been studying the role a union has in a workplace. Students were placed into small groups and asked to advocate for students’ rights, conditions and fair working environment. Topics included:
No Access to the building prior to 8:40am
1 toilet break per day, no toilet access during break times.
Mandatory 2-hour Wednesday after school study sessions
No access to the building during recess
No kitchen access
10min lunch time access then immediate exit of the building
No mobile phones - as per state regulation
10-minute extension into lunch time for any content not delivered in class
Students had to back up their arguments with current policies and procedures in Victoria. Students collated their information to present to the class their topic and the reasons why they should or should not have that right at school.
