Hello from the Autism Inclusion Teacher
April is World Autism Awareness Month, a time dedicated to increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This month highlights the diverse perspectives and strengths of individuals with autism while also challenging the stigma and misconceptions they may encounter.
World Autism Awareness Day (April 2nd) is a day sanctioned by the United Nations (UN) that recognises and celebrates the rights of people on the autism spectrum. Many refer to the day as World Autism Understanding Day (WAUD) as it is about more than awareness— it’s about action.
At HEPS we recognised World Autism Understanding Day on Friday April 4th. Leading up to the day, students engaged in a variety of activities that encouraged discussions around neurodiversity, autism, difference, and inclusion. These activities helped build empathy, promote acceptance, and highlight the strengths and unique perspectives of all individuals.
Our school came together to celebrate the many ways people experience and interact with the world. Students and staff expressed their support by wearing bright, sparkly, or simply their favourite clothing—embracing the joy of individuality. By participating in World Autism Understanding Day, we continue our commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment where every student feels valued and understood.
Thank you to all the students and staff who took part in this important day!
Finally, I would like to gauge interest in continuing HEPS “Let’s Talk Neurodivergence” Parent Coffee & Chat sessions. I’ve included a survey with a couple of time options, and we’ll select the majority preference to ensure the sessions are accessible to as many as possible.
These sessions are open to all, and we welcome your participation in fostering an inclusive and supportive community.
Thank you for your time and input!
