Unit Circle
Last week our Year 10 pre-methods students engaged in a unique lesson that combined creativity with mathematics. After learning how to sketch trigonometric graphs in under 60 seconds, the students were invited to try it out in pairs – using the classroom windows as their canvas!
The result was nothing short of inspiring. Students quickly mastered the technique, transforming the classroom into a vibrant space filled with their mathematical art, some even captured the moment with photos, reflecting their pride and engagement.
The lesson also incorporated animation to demonstrate how the unit circle transforms into sine and cosine graphs. To further enhance the experience a Lego robot was built to sketch these graphs, allowing students to interact with the process by rotating the wheel on the robot.
This experience underscores the power of student agency in the classroom. When students are given the freedom to explore and express themselves, they achieve incredible results. It also serves as a reminder that mathematics is not about memorisation but about understanding and applying concepts in meaningful ways.
