Reading is Magic

During Week 6, the 19th – 23rd of August, St Kevin’s is celebrating Book Week.  We have a number of activities and an author study.

On Monday the 19th of August we had our Book Parade, it commenced at 9.15am in our  Stadium. It was wonderful to see so many children dress up and be a part of St Kevin’s annual book week parade, keeping in mind the theme ‘Reading is Magic’. It was wonderful to see Parents and carers attend the event.

State Grant information

The announcement of $243 million worth of Capital Grants to Non-Government Schools was made last week.  In total there were 65 Catholic schools in Victoria who received building grants.   Unfortunately St Kevin’s was not one of the successful schools.

These schools were dominated by:

• New Catholic Schools in the growth areas of Melbourne

• Many country schools • Many Catholic secondary schools

• Only 3 of the 65 Primary schools who received building grants were in the Eastern Region.

Click here for a full list of grant recipients. https://www.schoolbuildings.vic.gov.au/building-fund-non-government-schools-catholic

We put a lot of time, effort into this application with the support of MACS and independent surveyors.  It was incredibly disappointing not to receive the grant especially as we do have pressing building requirements at St Kevin’s.  Very soon work will commence on restoration of the roof in the Senior Building.  The work has been quoted and a builder has been chosen.

What does this mean for St Kevin’s school? As there was only one round of grants in this allocation, we will need to wait until the next Federal and State election cycle to plead the case for more capital funds for Catholic schools. We will ensure that our buildings and grounds are as safe and well kept as they can be.

In the next couple of weeks I will be meeting with Keith Wolahan, our Federal member for parliament to discuss Catholic education and how they can better support us financially. I will also be meeting with Wayne Hay (Team Leader, Infrastructure Policy and Strategy) from MACS to discuss the need for school improvement and the best opportunities for our students.

Catholic school families pay the same taxes and charges as government school parents.  All we are asking for, is a fair share of funding and allocation to our schools.

Happy One Hundred Days of School to our Preps

On Friday the 9th of August, the Prep Students and Miss Montalto marked the 100 days of school by dressing up as 100 year olds. Costume ideas included lots of beards, glasses, walking sticks and wigs.

The day was full of fun activities to celebrate, including making 100 day necklaces using Fruitloops and, of course, lots of fun maths activities. They ended the day with a special assembly and  received lots of congratulations cards and greetings.

We are all so proud of our Preps and look forward to seeing them grow over the next 7 years. Thank you to Miss Montalto and support staff for making this a memorable day for the children.
