State School Spectacular – Saturday 14th September – John Cain Arena

From the 12th to the 14th of September, eleven students from Lyndale Secondary College participated in the State Schools Spectacular. All three days were met with early mornings at the train station with two full days of rehearsals before the performance day on Saturday. The students did a fantastic job with their two performances, adapting to the changes put before them due to weather, amongst other things. It has been amazing to see the growth in confidence amongst the students from the initial rehearsals early in the year, compared to performace day. Everyone involved should be extremely proud of their achievements in representing Lyndale Secondary College and for the amazing performances!

Koorie Art Article

By Mahnoor Nabeel

Senior Arts Captain 2024

On 15th and 22nd of August, students undergoing art or of Koorie background had the opportunity to contribute to the Indigenous art installation created by Bunurong elder and artist Steve ‘Ulula’ Parker. Students would receive a talk detailing the connection between First Nations people and the environment in the Yarning circle. They would learn about the various fauna planted in the bush tucker garden and its historical significance, allowing them to form a greater appreciation for the newly built space.

Afterwards, the group would walk to the far left of the Stadium to see the contemporary air-brushed murals. Working collaboratively, students would contribute to the artworks by thoughtfully including relevant symbols, fruit and motifs. After a few sessions of careful work, there would be an opening ceremony for the Womenjika cultural learning space. This would involve a smoking ceremony, as well as a chance for the visiting primary school students to contribute to the artworks by adding their handprints. Overall, the incursion provided a unique outlook into perspectives of First Nations people, fostering a deep bond between them and the Lyndale community.

“The Koorie art incursion was a fantastic way for my friends and I to learn about the First Nation culture” – Minty Kaur, 11A.

Write a Book in a Day

Seven teams of students from Lyndale Secondary College participated in the 'Write A Book In A Day' National Challenge, a creative writing competition that doubles as a fundraiser for The Kids’ Cancer Project on Wednesday, 28th August. This annual event brings together young writers and illustrators working together in groups to collaboratively craft a complete story in just 12 hours, using parameters with specific characters, settings, objects, themes, and words.

This year’s participants from Years 7 to 9 embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and dedication. Keyda Suson from Year 9C shared her thoughts on the experience: “Not only do you improve your writing skills, but you also get to know your classmates better and strengthen friendships.” The students worked tirelessly, brainstorming ideas, writing, illustrating, and editing their stories to meet the competition’s deadline.

For Lyndale Secondary College, participation in this event has become a cherished tradition, inspiring students to think creatively and collaborate closely with their peers.

These students have shown that storytelling can be a powerful tool for change, supporting the arts and broader community needs.
