Foundation Day

On the last day of term for our students, Friday 22 March, we will celebrate the birth of our school 138 years ago.

On this day in 1886, the secondary school was officially opened in the convent parlour with only eight pupils.

Today, St Joseph’s College is a vibrant, multi campus education facility, housing over 1000 students and close to 200 allied and teaching staff.

To mark this special occasion, we will join together as a whole school community on Friday for a Liturgy and Mini Market at our Brigidine Campus.

The Mini Market will be coordinated by our students and will include lots of fun activities for everyone to participate in and delicious food items for sale!

All proceeds from the Mini Market will go to Project Compassion and we encourage students to get involved and support this great cause.

Students are reminded that all food and activity stalls will be cash only so don’t forget to bring as many coins as you can!

Please be advised the canteen will also be closed at lunch time on this day.

We look forward to celebrating this special occasion with our school community.

St Joseph’s College has a long and proud history of providing quality Catholic education in the Echuca Moama region.

In the lead up to our Foundation Day, our Archivist has dug up some wonderful old photographs and tales for us to share about some of the incredible people that came before us and helped make our College what it is today.

This is a photograph of early students from about 1895.

Three of these young women would later go on to take their religious vows into the Community of St Brigid. All three would dedicate their lives to educating the young at various Brigidine schools across the state.

Sr. Gertude and Sr. Ursula were both nieces of founding sister Benedict Moore. Sr. De Sales was the daughter of prominent Pine Grove farmer James Dullard. Sisters Gerturde, Ursula and De Sales would all teach at St Joseph's for many, many years.

Don’t like wearing a school uniform?

Imagine if you had to wear this brown woollen school blazer from the 1940s!

As we continue to take a trip down memory lane in the lead up to our 138th birthday, we have been reflecting on some of our past school uniforms, like this blazer pictured on Joyce Worsnop during her time at St Joseph's College.

The blazer would have been worn with the winter uniform, which included a white cotton button up shirt, brown wool pinafore and matching brown tie. All topped off with a brown felted hat.

The pin on the lapel indicates that the student was a member of the Young Christian Students association.

Many past pupils would agree that these unlined jackets were dreadfully scratchy and blisteringly hot during warm days!
