The 2024 NGV Triennial and Top Arts Excursion
On a bright day in March 2024, a group of eager VCE Making and Exhibiting students set out on a journey that promised to immerse them deeply into the world of contemporary art and exhibition. This excursion, crafted with precision to cover a wide spectrum of VCE outcomes, was a doorway to exploration, learning, and inspiration unlike any other.
Leaving the familiar surroundings of their school early in the morning, the students headed to Melbourne's cultural heart. Their destinations were none other than the prestigious National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) and the vibrant Top Arts exhibition at Federation Square. The anticipation of what lay ahead was palpable, setting the stage for a day filled with art and discovery.
The adventure began with a visit to Top Arts, showcasing the exceptional talents of VCE Art and Studio Arts students. This exhibition served as a source of inspiration, presenting a window into the innovative minds of young artists. Students were encouraged to reflect on the techniques, themes, and stories woven into each artwork, connecting on a personal level with the creations on display.
Next, the journey led them to the NGV International, where the Triennial awaited. Greeted by an NGV Educator, the students were treated to a floor talk designed especially for them. This wasn't just a tour; it was an engaging dialogue that delved into the core of contemporary art practices and exhibition-making. The educator skillfully connected the dots between the curriculum and the artworks, offering insights that enriched the students' understanding and appreciation of the art world.
A pause for lunch in the NGV's Great Hall and gardens offered a moment of relaxation and camaraderie, as students shared their thoughts and experiences from the morning's explorations.
The remainder of the afternoon was dedicated to a self-guided journey through the NGV Triennial. Renowned for its global perspective, the exhibition presented a diverse collection of artworks, from installations to digital creations, each challenging and delighting in its own way. This hands-on experience allowed students to make direct connections to their own art-making practices and aspirations.
As the day ended and the group made their way back, the air was filled with ideas and inspiration. This excursion was more than a field trip; it was a milestone in the students' educational journey, offering a deeper understanding of the art world and their place within it.
The power of this art education experience lies in its ability to broaden horizons, ignite creativity, and foster a deep appreciation for the vast spectrum of human expression. March 18, 2024 will be remembered as the day art transcended the confines of the classroom, inviting these young artists to explore, question, and contribute to the world in their own unique ways.
Thanks to all who attended and contributed to the day.
