Forest School

It is with a heavy heart and a happy soul that I hand over the Forest School Fairy crown to gorgeous Ginny Tulloch as of the end of this term. What a magical ride it has been.

I have had such a wonderful time developing this program with your children. Alongside these beautiful beings I have learnt how to be a Forest Fairy… wading through mud, hiding in bushes, sparking fires and eating sand cakes. Witnessing the growth, confidence and self-directed learning occurring has been my greatest joy. I now see children that didn’t know ‘what to do’, leading activities that nourish their souls and nurture their growth. I watch children that were scared to ‘walk the plank’ at the dam, running and jumping confidently around the water, exploring the habitat. I hear the children singing ‘our songs’ in the bush as they play, joyfully connecting with their passions and peers.

Many, many thanks to Matt who asked if I’d consider running a specialist class that would address the Science curriculum in Middle Gully. He trusted me when I proposed this Forest School program that dives so deeply into many parts of the curriculum, most obviously the Sciences and Personal & Social Capabilities, and deepens the children’s connection to the land. In a number of conversations about how it was evolving he said to me, “Well, it’s a bit out there but I’ve got your back.” Yep, I am a bit out there. But I believe strongly in the philosophy, ethos and research behind Forest School and can’t find a downside to extended nature play.

May you all continue to play in nature, letting it seep into your souls and nurture your wellbeing. I love hearing about the bush adventures many families have on weekends, holidays and extended trips. The children’s faces light up when they describe their observations and encounters. These experiences are shaping our next generation of custodians!

Thank you to all the parents that supported the Forest School program, you allowed us to do extra special activities. Thank you to the staff of Macedon Primary school who supported (and tolerated) my unconventional ways. I admit there was mud. Everywhere.

Keep an eye out for me around the mountains and rivers of North East Victoria!

Tread gently,

Sarah the Forest Fairy.
