Year 6 News

Interschool Sport → Elita

This term, the Year 6s have been doing Interschool Sports. The sports that we had were Basketball, Volleyball, Cricket and Tennis. We have developed many skills playing these sports and had a lot of fun competing against other schools. I personally enjoyed practising with my friends at snack and lunch and playing against different schools every Thursday. Most of the teams made finals, so they will play against schools from another division next term!

Hockey Clinic → Jacob

Two people came to our school to teach us how to play hockey. They came from Saint Bedes hockey club. They told us all the basic rules of hockey and showed us how to use and hit the puck. They showed us how to hit the puck straight and how to pass. We had to learn how to control the puck without losing it. They told us that when you pass you can’t hit the puck too hard or the person you are hitting it to will most likely lose control. We had to hit at the right speed and the right power so that our partner could catch the puck. Most of us had never played hockey before but we all managed and learnt something new. They were kind enough to help us with some problems if we needed help. Each class was divided into two groups to do different activities, in my activity we had to have control of the puck and move it around cones. We also learned how to smash the ball and it was really fun. We ended our session with the two guides giving us letters in case we would like to try out hockey. Overall, it was a cool experience trying out a new sport. We were all really grateful for being able to try out hockey since they were kind enough to teach us how to play. In the end I think almost everyone learned something new.

Inquiry → Delta & Riley

In Inquiry, we’ve been learning about the continents and the countries of specific continents, for example, Europe. People had to choose two countries and they had to write what the differences and similarities of these countries were. In our inquiry topic we’ve been learning about North America, Europe and Asia. We got to pick any of the countries in the specific continents. My personal favourite was Asia, and the country I researched about was North Korea. I had fun researching the life and culture of North Korea. It was also very hard, since North Korea is a secluded country. When we got our own country we had to research about it, we needed to research two countries in preparation of our comparing and contrasting writing. The topics that we had to research included the country information, culture, economics, geographical features and population. Overall, researching about the different countries was a very interesting topic and we had fun learning about it.

Religion → Khang

In religion so far we have been learning about comparing the different accounts of the creation story, as we have compared the Catholic account, Genesis, and the Indigenous account, Bunjil the Creator. We have also explored the ways that Caritas has helped the Solomon Islands by funding them with money to create a water system that was serviced to over 1000 people. It would help with working toilets, working bathroom sinks and a reliable access to water for all of the community. It was a big change for the Solomon islands since 80% of people didn’t have access to flushing waters and clean waters. One of our lessons included how the CARITAS helped a woman in the forest grow crops and helped her make chips and oils to help her family. She had lost her husband and had a hard time earning money but CARITAS helped her. One of my favourite activities we have done in Term 1 was having the chance to observe modern art about Holy Week and trying to find some cool clues and references from the art.

Farm 2 Table →Uyen

All of the year sixes had their final farm to table. It was hosted by Mrs Callander-Brown with the help of Mrs. Frau. We were divided into two groups, one for dessert and one for the main meal. The main meal was a vegetarian mix cooked in a puff pastry and the dessert was a strawberry roll with whipped cream. Both groups had to pick fresh produce from our garden. We got to pick tomatoes, lemon leaves, spring onions and lettuce from the garden to make our dishes. We had the SRCs read a prayer before we ate and the meals were really good. I ate with my friends and my teacher and we all had a really good time. After we were done with the meals, we packed the dishes and set out to wash them. I'm sure everyone enjoyed it, especially since it was our last farm to table. Afterwards we celebrated one of my classmate’s birthday. It was a special day for us since we were able to spend time together with our family and were able to do farm to table for the last time.

Art Incursion → Gwynneth

Last week on Tuesday the 12th the whole school painted signs to be put on the fence in front of the drain. Each class was assigned a recycled sign that was made into a canva and painted something from the wetlands. The year sixes painted Kite birds, Kookaburras and Wrens. Each class got separated into groups and had different shaped signs. We also were assigned different colours for different classes. In the morning the whole school had an assembly to introduce the people that came to our school. After the assembly the year 5/6s stayed in the hall to learn about the environmental impact we make. We got to talk about how different items last until decomposition, we had 10 different people come up and guess how long it takes to break different materials down. It was really interesting finding out  how different products break down. We also talked about water and how if we pollute it what would be the effects. After talking about water and how they have effects on animals and use, we got handed a piece of paper. On that paper there were two questions. We had to answer them and then we headed out, we got back to our classroom and started preparing for painting. When we finished we started sketching out our animals then started to fill them with paint. It was a fun experience and we are looking forward to seeing them at the front of our school.

Resilience Project → Ava

Every Friday we participate in the Resilience Project. This year our school motto is G.E.M, which stands for gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. The Resilience Project helps us to practice doing those things so that we can use them in our daily lives. One of the subjects we have been working on is mindfulness. We learnt that sometimes your brain is always thinking about what you are going to eat for lunch or what you talked about with your friends at recess. That is an example of not being mindful, because you’re either thinking about the future or the past, and not the present. Learning how to be mindful is actually a skill that you can use later in your life too. We also enjoyed  meeting Hugh, (through video) who is the creator of the Resilience Project. He started this program because he went to India and found that more kids were happier with no devices, less toys and barely anything at all. This was because these kids expressed gratitude. Hugh noticed that children with lots of resources always thought of themselves and took things for granted. So we have started being grateful for more things that we have. The Resilience Project also has little activities that help us express G.E.M. My class tried one where we had a secret friend, and we had to do nice things for them. At the end, we told each other who our secret friends were. It helped us realise that sometimes we need someone to do one kind thing, and then we can do another kind thing for someone else. In the photos pictured below, my class and I were practicing mindfulness by going into nature and using our 5 senses. If you were really mindful, then you would notice small things like a spider making a web, or an ant looking for food instead of just seeing bushes and trees. All these activities we tried are so much fun and we learnt a lot of new skills that we can use at home, in the classroom or anywhere. I enjoyed participating in the Resilience Project this term, I am looking forward to a great term two!
