Take note

Road safety reminder

We wish to remind parents and carers about the importance of safe driving practices in our school zone. The safety and wellbeing of our students is our key priority at St Mary's College and we urge all members of our community to remain vigilant around roads, particularly in the morning and afternoon during the busy pick-up and drop off-periods.

We ask that parents and carers take extra care when driving and parking around the College and adhere to the signed parking rules. They are designed to keep children safe.

  • You must not park or stop in a 'No Stopping' area or bus zone for any reason.
  • You can only stop in a 'No Parking' area for the immediate purpose of picking up passengers.
  • Remember, our 'Kiss and Go' zone on Harrington Street is designated to support students to safely enter and exit the school and to alleviate traffic congestion.
  • It is illegal to 'double park' by stopping next to another car already parked near the kerb.
  • You must not encroach on or park across a driveway, blocking access for property owners.

Your child will learn about pedestrian safety by watching you, so please use safe behaviour around cars, roads, footpaths and car parks.

  • For example, when crossing the road, always cross at the safest point, even if you have to walk further out of your way. Look both ways multiple times before crossing, ensuring it's clear in both directions.
  • Make eye contact with drivers to ensure they see you.
  • Avoid distractions like headphones or phones while crossing, or when walking around cars.

Students are required to use the traffic lights when crossing at the Patrick Street/Harrington Street and Brisbane Street/Harrington Street intersections (pictured above).
