Anderson Café Update
The Hospitality students and TAS department have opened a student lead and staffed Café in the Anderson Centre Foyer. This Café has environmentalism at the front of its design and how it is run. There are no take-away cups or single use items. The coffee grounds go into a worm farm that is used in the Anderson Grow room gardens.
We have great plans to further develop the space with a range of seating for students to use throughout the day, both inside and outside the Café. In keeping with the environmental theme we are looking for donated up-cycled furniture. So far, we have a 2 and 3 seater lounge and 2 coffee tables. We are looking for café tables and chairs (see inspiration images). If you have anything you would like to donate that might suit, please get in contact! ryoull@kws.nsw.edu.au
Olivia Warner - Excellence in Hospitality
We would like to acknowledge and congratulate Liv Warner of Year 12 for her amazing effort at the World Skills Competition. Liv achieved a Certificate of Excellence after three days of professional cooking competition.
Careers and Pathways Program
Many students took the opportunity to hear from a wide range of visiting speakers during Term 2. These visits augment the school's Careers and Pathways Program and assist students in making informed decisions about their post school options.
Year 7 Wellbeing Update
Year 7 meet each fortnight as a cohort, to celebrate success and to address any updates or changes for routine for the upcoming weeks. A feature of these cohort meetings is to celebrate both academic and pastoral successes from each fortnight. These range from Citizenship points or academic efforts recorded by staff in the HUB learning platform, through to any prizes or certificates that students have been awarded during the fortnight.
Throughout Term 2, Year 7 have focused on Gratitude as a character strength across the cohort. In Week two of Term, students were introduced to the ‘Wellbeing Wall’, which includes each of the members of the Year 7 Cohort (pictured). During the cohort meeting in Week 2, students learned the science and positive outcomes behind showing gratitude, (including that people who express gratitude get sick less, and get better sleep!) and brainstormed actions that might result in people showing gratitude.
This, a new addition to the Year 7 Quad, provides a medium for students to share thanks, or acknowledge a peer that they feel has exemplified the term’s Year 7 Focus. During each fortnight, students who wish to say ‘Goodonya’ to a peer can collect a ‘Goodonya’ ticket from the Year 7 Coordinator, and will outline the reasons that they are awarding the ‘Goodonya’ to their peer. Once complete, the student will award their peer with the ‘Goodonya’ by placing it on the Wellbeing Wall. In the following cohort meeting, recipients are congratulated, and are awarded with their ‘Goodonya’ tickets, detailing gratitude they have received from their peers.
It has been pleasing to see the way in which Year 7 have taken on this initiative. To see students handing out ‘Goodonya’s’ and also celebrating their peers each fortnight is a testament to the community that they are building in the playground.
In Term 3, the cohort focus will be Kindness.
Year 7 Holiday Information
This information is for parents/carers of Year 7 Students, in preparation for the School Holiday period.
As we head toward the Term 2 Holiday, students are reminded of the need to tidy and lock their locker prior to the end of term. During the holiday period, lockers will be locked to prevent access. Prior to this time, students have been reminded to take home the following items that they may have in their locker:
- Food
- Containers such as lunchbox/cooler bags
- Scraps of paper
- Rubbish
- Valuables
- Musical Instruments
- Stickers on inside/outside of locker
It is also recommended that students have their own personal lock on their locker, for use during the school day. As the Year 7 locker area is a thoroughfare for high school students, this is an important measure to ensure the security of students’ items.
Wishing you and your children a safe and relaxing holiday,
Mr Will Waterson
Year 7 Coordinator.
Year 9 History
Our Year 9 History students have rounded out their study of History this semester with an excursion to Sydney.
Day 1 consolidated our students understanding of World War 1 with visits to the State Library and Hyde Park cenotaph. Students participated in workshops handling primary sources and artefacts from the Great War. At the Cenotaph they saw a dramatic monologue of four nurses' experiences during World War I.
Day 2 was spent at the Sydney Jewish Museum where the students heard from Holocaust survivor, 92 year old Dr Richard Haber and participated in workshops furthering their understanding of World War II.
Many thanks to the staff for their efforts on the excursion: Mrs Jackson, Mr Stevens, Mr Kerridge and our prac teacher Miss Nicholson
Year 7 History
Our Year 7 History students have attempted mummification - of a chicken carcass!
To enhance their understanding of Ancient Egypt and burial rituals our students were taken through a hands-on process of mummification.
