Senior Learning Update
Mr Matt Byrne, Acting Executive Director, Learning & Wellbeing
As we approach our Subject Selection Evening next Thursday, we would like to provide you with important information regarding the Stage 5 Elective Program at Kinross Wolaroi School. While I will elaborate on this during the evening, we understand that not all families may be able to attend, so we wish to share this overview in advance.
Enhancing Student Experience
Our commitment to delivering high-quality learning experiences is core to the Kinross Wolaroi Academic Program. The Stage 5 Electives Program implemented in 2026 is designed to significantly enhance the student experience, with a primary focus on preparing our students for the rigours and expectations of Stage 6 studies.
Key Benefits of the New Structure
Expanded Elective Choices in Year 9
Students will have the opportunity to explore three diverse electives in Year 9. This exposure will help them make informed decisions as they transition into Stage 6, where specialisation becomes increasingly important.
Boost in Literacy and Numeracy
In Year 10, additional time will be dedicated to English and Mathematics. This is critical preparation for Stage 6, where English is compulsory and Mathematics is strongly recommended for many tertiary pathways. Our goal is to ensure that students have a solid foundation in these essential skills.
Stage 5 Elective Structure
For students preparing for Year 9 in 2026, the elective structure will be as follows:
This structure not only allows for a breadth of learning experiences but also paves the way for more in-depth study in two electives during Year 10.
Additional Information
The mechanics of how to submit your elective preferences will be explained in detail during the Subject Selection Evening and in a subsequent Year 8 meeting. This information will also be posted on the HUB for your convenience.
We are excited about the opportunities this new structure presents and look forward to discussing the Stage 5 Elective Program further at the Subject Selection Evening.
